ULC Board Member Tapped as City Administrator for Washington, D.C.

 

Rashad Young, ULC Board Member,

has been tapped by Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser as D.C.'s new City Administrator when she takes office next month. "Rashad has a track record of success, the experience to get results, and the energy to execute my ambitious agenda for all eight wards," said Bowser. "Our approach to governing is straightforward: using the best practices, technology and talent to deliver services efficiently to the residents and businesses of Washington, D.C."

Rashad currently serves as City Administrator for Alexandria, VA. Read about this in the Washington Post. Congratulations, Rashad! 

New Pew Report on Internet Usage         

 

The Pew Research Center has again asked internet users a variety of questions about the role of the internet in their lives and the impact the internet use has had on key aspects of their lives. This report focuses on: Does the internet and cell phones help people learn new things and feel better informed? Does this outweigh any possible feelings of information overload? A large majority (87%) of American adult internet users say the internet has improved their ability to learn new things. Read the full report here.  


Ferguson Library Update


Donations to Ferguson Municipal Public Library now top $350,000. Gifts of books will keep the library cataloger busy for some time, library director Scott Bonner says. On Saturday, Publishers Weekly magazine announced that support for the Ferguson library is one of the top library stories of the year. The industry magazine ranked the Ferguson library story No. 4 out of 10, writing that "the library's response to its community in its time of need-and the nation's response to the Ferguson library-has been truly inspiring." Omaha's First Digital Library Planned


 

Omaha's first digital library will open next fall. The Omaha Public Library partnered with Metropolitan Community College on the project. Technology will include "individual computer stations with access to databases from libraries around the world, dedicated children's areas for interactive story times, innovation labs for creation in a digital environment, production areas featuring 3D printers

Salt Lake City Public Library 24/7 Library Service Pilot

 

From the Deseret News, the Salt Lake City Public Library's 24/7 Library Service pilot:
"Very often people look at problems...that could develop," John Spears, the library's executive director, said. "Taking a longer-term view of this, some of the problems that we face in Salt Lake City and society in general are a lack of education, a lack of continued development. And that's what a library is for. ... I see this as improving security in Salt Lake City."
