ULC Libraries: Getting to the Evidence
October 5-7, 2016
Kansas City Marriott Downtown - Kansas City, MO

As vital community leaders, public libraries need to strengthen their programs and practices with effective frameworks for evaluating and demonstrating community impact. This October, ULC invites library executives and leadership team members to share innovative models and strategies for measuring community outcomes at the 2016 ULC Annual Forum!

And, we want you to help us showcase how ULC libraries are "getting to the evidence!" If your library has conducted a return-on-investment (ROI) study, ULC invites you to send us your reports as we expand the resources in our new members only Knowledge Center and prepare for the Annual Forum. ULC will make all submitted ROI reports available to members through the Knowledge Center.

Visit the ULC website to learn more about the Annual Forum and register today!

If you have questions or would like to submit an ROI study, please contact ULC Member Programs Executive Katherine Behrens.

Edmonton Public Library Offers Wifi Hotspots

Edmonton Public Library (EPL) recently launched a new progam that will lend Wifi hotspots to library patrons in an effort to expand broadband access in the community. The two-year pilot program kicked off last week with a total of 40 available hotspots for adult library cardholders to check out. Patrons can check out the hotspots, which provide access to unlimited data, for up to three weeks at a time.

In a recent press release, EPL chief executive officer Pilar Martinez emphasized the importance of "providing people the skills and support they need to participate in the digital world" and said that the program is "a key tool for access to learning and information to those who need it most."

Meet ULC Board Chair Michael Sherrod

As technology and digital innovation continue to shape the role of public libraries as community leaders, we are excited to have Michael Sherrod serve as Chair of the ULC Executive Board. As the Texas Christian University (TCU) William M. Dickey Entrepreneur in Residence, he teaches undergraduates and manages an interdisciplinary, faculty based entrepreneurship program.

Sherrod has been a pioneer in the online world since 1985. In addition to founding/co-founding ten companies, including Black Dove Media, LLC, and DigitalCity.com, he has served in senior management roles at AMR Information Services, AOL, Ancestry.com and Examiner.com. He recently served as the first publisher of TexasTribune.org, is immediate past chair of the board of Umbel.com and sits on the Kinsey Institute board of trustees. Sherrod's strong tech background provides ULC with valuable insight into the current digital landscape and how libraries can leverage these resources for greater impact.

Library-School Partnership Expands Summer Learning in Portland, Maine

Summer Learning Day may have flown by but that doesn't mean that summer learning is over! In a local op-ed piece, Portland Public Schools Superintendent Xavier Botana highlights how a partnership with Portland Public Library has strengthened summer learning in his community. The Reading in Portland: Time of Wonder summer program centers on helping elementary students read about and explore the natural world. Armed with a reading log/adventure map, students can participate in a number of outdoor activities and work toward a goal of reading eight books during the summer. Botana credits the Library as a valuable partner in helping to extend summer learning beyond school walls and keep kids engaged throughout the summer.
