White House Honors Felton Thomas as a White House Champion of Change for Making
Cleveland Public Library (CPL) Director, Felton Thomas, was recently honored as one of ten "White House Champions of Change for Making". Thomas was recognized for his efforts in advancing technology platforms, educational opportunities and spaces that empower Americans to become tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs.
CPL was also recognized for its innovative makerspace, TechCentral, which first opened in 2012. TechCentral provides patrons with open access to laser engraving, 3D printing, audio, video, photo production tools, as well as basic computers and laptops. TechCentral as expanded its reach to include MakerLab programs at 27 CPL branches, too. Congratulations to Felton and the staff of CPL!

Toronto Public Library Partners with Google to Lend Wi-Fi Hotspots
Toronto Public Library (TPL) has joined Toronto Mayor John Tory in a partnership with Google Canada to pilot a Wi-Fi hotspot lending program at six TPL branches. The program, made possible with a donation from Google.org and funds from the city's 2016 operating budget, aims to close the digital divide for those that cannot afford broadband internet at home. All participating branches are located in "neighborhood improvement areas" serving large numbers of low income households.
TPL has identified 210 pilot participants to use the hotspots for up to six months with 10GB of data per month. To help participants get the most out of their new devices, TPL will hold an orientation session for participants and show them how to use the hotspots and access the library's extensive list of eLearning and digital resources.

New York Public Library to Launch Curriculum on 3D Modeling, Printing and Entrepreneurship
New York Public Library (NYPL) kicked off the
National Week of Making by announcing a new partnership with
Shapeways EDU to launch a free, open source curriculum on the entrepreneurial side of 3D modeling and printing technology. The pilot program, set to launch in the fall, aims to empower the public by providing innovators and entrepreneurs with resources for developing digital manufacturing skills.
As part of the collaboration, they are also developing a "turn-key curriculum" that NYPL tech education staff can use to offer courses without depending on outside resources. Following the launch of the fall program, Shapeways and NYPL plan to expand the program on the national level by creating additional course materials and publishing the curriculum under an open source license, allowing any public library or institution to offer the program to their patrons.
