ULC Webinar: Bridging the Digital Divide --- Library Hot Spot Lending Programs
Tuesday, June 16, 2015
9-10 am PT | 10-11 am MT | 11 am-12 pm CT | 12-1 pm ET

The latest buzz coming out of public libraries is all about Hot Spot Lending Programs! These low-cost devices can be carried anywhere and provide mobile broadband wireless Internet access. ULC member libraries are launching innovative programs to help close the divide, increase education opportunities and create broadband adoption outside their physical walls with Hot Spot Lending Programs.

Join program leaders from New York Public Library and Saint Paul Public Library as they discuss their school, community, and service provider partnerships they developed to launch their successful Hot Spot Lending programs. The presenters will share details about their lending policies and what they did to ensure a sustainable program for their customers within their library budget. ULC members will also share the success and challenges libraries have faced when implementing a lending program.

Google Fiber and NTEN Launch Digital Inclusion Fellowship, Include ULC Libraries as Host Sites

Google Fiber and the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN)
have partnered to launch the first ever Digital Inclusion Fellowship. The fellowship will pair two emerging leaders in each of Google Fiber's eight metro areas with community organizations to spend a year building localized programs to get more people online and trained in digital literacy. Two of the first host organizations are ULC libraries: Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Nashville Public Library.

Through this partnership, Google Fiber is
investing $1 million to launch the fellowship, fund salaries and benefits for fellows, and provide stipends for organizations to kickstart their new programs.

Over the next few weeks, fellowship partners will be recruiting fellows who are local, know the target populations, and are passionate about what access to the Internet could mean for their community. Once selected, fellows will travel to Google's offices in Mountain View, Calif., to receive specialized training from NTEN on how to build effective digital inclusion programs. The application deadline for fellows is June 10, 2015.
