If you would like to learn new approaches to data collection and analysis, then join us for the latest ULC webinar: Stress Testing for Innovation: How to Gauge Your Library's Programs.

The Free Library of Philadelphia recently won a 2015 Top Innovator in Organization Change and Strategic Management for their innovation - Strategic Initiatives: A Hatchery for Innovation. Listen in as the FLP Strategic Initiatives department shares details about the stress test tool they built to support the library's focus on statistics and measurable outcomes, and how they have improved the library overall by stress testing over seven library programs and reviewing more than 80 staff suggestions for library programs.

And learn from Sno-Isle Libraries, a 2015 Honorable Mention in Operations for Data Analysis for Decision Making and Communication, as they discuss the dedicated positions they developed - data analysis librarian and a research analyst - to collect data to inform better decision making, motivate staff, create a cultural shift and communicate the library's value to the community in easily understood graphics and language.

Richland Library Offers FEMA Assistance, Resources to South Carolina Flood Victims

Richland Library is serving as a strong community anchor in the face of the devastating flooding that inundated South Carolina communities earlier this month and continues to pose challenges for the state's recovery efforts. In the wake of this natural disaster, Richland Library is providing community residents with FEMA application assistance, critical recovery resources, as well as a center for power and internet access.

The Library reopened last Wednesday and has been working diligently to provide a safe community space to help residents work toward restoring and reestablishing their lives. Staff and volunteers from United Way and local churches set up and maintained water distribution sites at branch locations and delivered National Guard supplies to homebound residents. They also provided books and storytimes to children and families at emergency shelters across the area.

ville Public Library Expands Tablet Lending Program for Children

Last week, Nashville Public Library (NPL) held a special Launch Party at the Southeast Branch Library to celebrate the addition of 700 new Launchpad tablets to the library's collection of take-home mobile devices.

NPL first debuted Launchpad tablets at three branch locations over the summer with 110 devices. The Library's recent purchase was made possible by a grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, bringing the total number to 810 and extending the lending program to all 21 branches. These colorful, kid-friendly tablets promote digital inclusion and strengthen literacy, math and technology skills through pre-loaded educational apps. Families can select Launchpads based on age level or themes, such as science or vocabulary.

DC Public Library Hosts Makers-In-Residence Program in Fab Lab

A recent DCist article highlights the DC Public Library's (DCPL) new Fabrication Lab (Fab Lab) and maker-in-residence program as one of the services at the forefront of DCPL innovation.

The DC Public Library Foundation launched the program this August, selecting two makers-in-residence to showcase and promote the value of the range of community resources available through the Fab Lab makerspace.

Through this program, makers Mike Iacovone and Bille Friebele each receive a $15,000 stipend and have full access to the Fab Lab to explore and make their own art/tech creations, as well as provide traveling workshops for the community at DCPL branch locations. The program will culminate in a local art gallery featuring Iacovone and Friebele's work, which ranges from robotics to laser-cutting

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION
Professional Group Study

The San Diego County Public Library Professional Group Study program gives refugees a jumpstart on careers in their adopted country by providing Welfare-to-Work credit for studying for professional recertification exams rather than taking typical classes such as English as a second language. The library established a system with agencies that oversee the Welfare-to-Work program for new refugees to track study time, prepare verification forms, and deliver required documents on behalf of students. More than 140 skilled professionals have exchanged class time for study time to prepare for U.S. licensing exams; several participants have earned engineering licenses and four have been admitted to medical residency programs.
