Public Libraries Addressing Summer Slide:
Initial Findings from Accelerate Summer Initiative

Over the last year, ULC and our partners from the  National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), supported by funding from the Institute of Museum Library Services (IMLS), explored the creative and exciting ways that libraries across the country are engaging youth and families in summer learning through the Accelerate Summer initiative.

Initial Accelerate Summer findings show that many public libraries are adding hands-on, inquiry-based and participatory learning opportunities to their incentive-based summer reading programs through intentional partnerships with schools, museums, city and county departments and other community entities.

Libraries are also contributing to community-wide educational goals by including integrated summer programming designed to address specific learning outcomes such as early literacy and STEM and increasing outreach to engage more kids and families, in more ways and in more places, especially in low-income communities. As recognized by NSLA at this years National Summer Learning Conference, public libraries are filling a critical gap during the summer months, providing access to learning opportunities for children, youth and families where these opportunities wouldn't exist otherwise and positioning libraries as vital education institutions.

ULC Members Partner with Schools to Connect Students to Library Resources

This school year a number of ULC libraries are implementing creative programs and partnerships with local school districts to ensure students have access to all the resources and services that they offer.

King County Library System is partnering with the Bellevue School District to provide students with special library accounts  that can access electronic library resources, including downloadable materials, databases, and online homework help. Kansas City Public Library also launched a program that will grant full library access to all 15,000 Kansas City Public School students. The program is strengthened by the fact that the Kansas City school district also provides many students with take-home laptops.

Jacksonville Public Library (JPL) takes the the concept a step further in connecting students with library staff and resources. In addition to providing 60,000 Duval County Public School students in the K-5th grade with virtual library cards, their Student Card program includes scheduled library field trips for K-2nd grade students, as well as in-classroom visits from JPL staff for 3rd-5th grade students. Educators in Duval County public, charter and private schools, as well as homeschool teachers, can also use JPL Educator Cards to take advantage of special privileges such as borrowing up to 100 books without overdue fines and more.

ULC, Edge Co-Sponsor International Conference on Bridging the Digital Divide

ULC and the Edge Initiative are proud to serve as co-sponsors for the Partnership for Progress on the Digital Divide (PPDD) 2015 International Conference. The conference, taking place October 21-22 at Arizona State University SkySong, explores the theme Creating Connections, Building Principles: Advancing the Digital Divide Research, Policy, and Practice Agenda. This event brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to consider the current state and future possibilities for research, policy, and practice that informs issues related to the digital divide around the world. The PPDD conference marks an important step in elevating the role that ULC, Edge and public libraries play in reducing the digital divide in communities through new and innovative strategies.

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION
Partnering to Succeed

Partnering to Succeed matches specific Los Angeles Public Library programs with complementary community-based organizations to increase the effectiveness of both in meeting neighborhood needs. Using this strategy, the library created a nationally recognized citizenship program, reduced health disparities in L.A.'s disadvantaged community, increased health programs in Asian communities, and provided support in getting health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.
