The United Methodist Church of Evergreen
Pastor Russell Fletcher

Third Sunday of Easter
S unday, April 30, 2017
8:30 and 10:30 Services

Russell's Ritings...

He couldn't speak before a crowd; he couldn't teach a class,

But when he came to Sunday School he brought the folks "en masse".

He couldn't sing to save his life; in public couldn't pray;

But always his 'jalopy' was just crammed on each Lord's Day.

And though he couldn't sing, nor teach, nor even lead in prayer,

He listened well; he had a smile, and he was always there -

With all the others whom he brought who lived near and far -

And God's work was greatly prospered for he had a consecrated car.

Well, the above little poem, author unknown, is not Tennyson or Frost but it shares a truth!  People are out there waiting for an invitation from a friendly layperson just like you!  Why don't you invite someone to church THIS Sunday!  This Sunday the Reverend Joyce Snapp will be preaching for us and we are thinking of you as you worship together!

And the folks are friendly,

Russell

ADULT EDUCATION

Sunday, April 30 from 9:30 - 10:20 am
WALKING THE LABYRINTH IN A WALKING MEDITATION
Facilitator: Dr. Lorna Idol
Come join the Adult Education Group for a spiritual journey! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about how labyrinths are utilized to bring one closer to God, to seek communion with God to explore life's challenges and to obtain God's guidance. We will learn about:  1) how labyrinths are used to enhance one's Christian spiritual journey through the labyrinth with a walking meditation; 2) some history on the use of labyrinth walking; 3) the symbolism behind the most famous Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth in France (See below picture.), which is one of the world's most well-known labyrinths, attracting pilgrims for over 1,000 years; and 4) view beautiful examples of labyrinths throughout the ages and over the last 4,000 years.  This information gathering will be followed by discussion, sharing of personal experiences with labyrinths and planning for a journey to walk a labyrinth after our 10:30 church service.

Sunday, May 7 and 14 from 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
Facilitator: Russell Fletcher
The Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue, are a set of Biblical principles relating to ethics and worship, which play a fundamental role in Judaism and Christianity. The commandments include instructions to worship only God, to honor one's parents, and to keep the Sabbath, as well as prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, adultery, theft, dishonesty, and coveting. Different religious groups follow different traditions for interpreting and numbering them. The Ten Commandments are listed twice in the Hebrew Bible, first in Exodus 20:1-17, and then in Deuteronomy 5:6-21. Both versions state that God inscribed them on two stone tablets, which he gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. Modern scholarship has found likely influences in Hittite and Mesopotamian laws and treaties, but is divided over exactly when the Ten Commandments were written and who wrote them. We will explore some of this history and scholarship. Then, we will rewrite The Ten Commandments in common, modern language and examine our hearts as we renew our own personal and private commitments to the Commandments.
