Summertime in Evergreen
Russell's Ritings,

George Washington wrote, "A slender acquaintance with the world must convince every person that actions, not words, are the true criteria of the attachment of friends; and that the most liberal professions of good will are very far from being the surest mark of it."

And Samuel Johnson wrote, "We cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed.  As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindnesses there is at last one which makes the heart run over."

This Sunday we continue to look at the David stories.  David was the son of Jesse and Jonathan was the son of Saul.  From different backgrounds, they formed a beautiful friendship.  Sunday's sermon is "David and Jonathan: Ties of Friendship."  (I Samuel 18: 1 - 4)  I hope to see you here - at the place where we make friends!

Blessings,
Russell
THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
Sunday, July 16th - 8:30 Outdoor Service

UMCE will have a special Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, July 16th at the 8:30 outdoor service.  All critters are welcome - furry, fuzzy or scaly.  Please join us for this fun celebration of the pets that bring so much joy to our lives. If your pet would not be fond of such an event, bring their favorite toy and we will bless that in their honor. Worship music for this service will be provided by Terry Vogt, Michael Fields, and Denwood Butler.

Carl Heckendorf, a licensed veterinarian, will be administering free rabies shots (and certificates) for dogs that need it.

If you would like a free rabies shot for your dog(s) please sign up in advance by calling the church office or by signing the sign-up sheet that will be circulated at Sunday Worship Services this coming Sunday, July 9th.

BOOK DRIVE FOR CHILDREN IN KENYA

Children's Books, etc. for Riruta School in Nairobi, Kenya

On the evening of Sunday, July 16, I leave for Kenya and Rwanda.  In September, 2014, many of you donated children's books that I delivered to an elementary school in the impoverished Riruta section of Nairobi.  The dilapidated school had previously been demolished by the Kenyan government as unsafe and then rebuilt mostly with support from the Center for Health and Hope (formerly the Center for the Church and Global AIDS).  Several of us from the Center attended its opening ceremony.  The books you sent were the start of a small library that meant children, for the first time, could take a book home to read with a parent or family member.  Some of the teachers and 158 students at this school are HIV+.  Some students and teachers get their only decent meal of the day at the school.

I am traveling to Kenya again with the Center and we will be stopping again at the Riruta school.  If you have books in English for young elementary school students that you would like to donate to the growing school library, please plan to bring them to church Sunday, June 25 or July 2 or 9, so I will have time to properly pack them.  I am also seeking small, stuffed animals for the youngest kids and some deflated soccer balls and frisbee disks for older kids.  If you would like to make a money donation to help this school, please make your check payable to UMC of Evergreen marked "Center for Health and Hope Riruta School" and place it in the offering plate or take it to the Church office.  Thank you for your generosity!  If you have any questions, please call my cell 303-246-8330.
