Russell's Ritings...

Holy Week is one of the busiest but one of the most meaningful times we spend.  Every Holy Week is special, but I remember one which was very special for me.  The year was 1968.  A black pastor in a nearby community asked me if it would hurt me in my ministry if I preached Holy Week Services in his church.  Even though I knew some of my folks would object, I gratefully accepted the invitation.  Sure enough, I had to deal with some criticism, but it was a great time of fellowship with a white preacher in a black church - one of the first times such a series of services was held in Mississippi.

One night after the service the pastor's wife came to me as I was leaving the church.  She said, "I know you would get criticism if you ate in our home, but I wanted to fix you some supper."  She handed me a box supper with fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and a wonderful slice of lemon cake.

It was getting late as I drove along the beach on my way back to my parsonage so I pulled over and ate my meal with a full moon and a full heart.  That is one of the times I have felt closest to God.  And that southern meal of fried chicken and trimmings tasted strangely like bread and wine!

(Please remember this was 50 years ago.  Things were different then - the days of the old Central Jurisdiction, segregated schools, the height of the civil rights movement, and our churches were even in different conferences though only a few miles apart)

I invite you to observe a special and memorable Holy Week with me - and UMCE - this week.  Sunday I will be preaching the last of the series on the Christian Vocabulary at 8:30 and at 10:30 our Chancel Choir will present their Easter Cantata.  We will also be receiving our confirmation class, one of the highlights of the year.

On Wednesday next week we will enjoy our final Lenten Concert with Dr. Suzanne Barchers, Flutist, in concert.

Thursday at 6 p. m. we will celebrate The Last Supper.  On Friday at noon - Black Friday - Good Friday - we will read the Passion Narrative.

On Sunday - the Sunday of Sundays, we will have two services at our regular times, 8:30 and 10:30.  I hope you will plan to come and spend the morning with us.  I will preach different sermons and the choir will be singing at both services.

So - Holy Week is upon us.  I hope to see you soon and often!

Blessings,
Russell
