Russell's Ritings...

I read a story this week about a young man whose wife had just died, leaving him with their small son.  When they arrived home from the cemetery they went to bed early because there was nothing else they could bear to do.  As the young man lay there in the darkness, grief stricken, heartbroken, numb with sorrow, the little boy broke the stillness of the moment with a disturbing question, "Daddy, where is mommy?"  The father tried to get the little boy to go to sleep, but the questions kept coming from his confused, childish mind.  "Where is mommy?  Why isn't she here?  When is she coming back?"

After a while, the father got up and brought the little boy to bed with him.  But the child was still disturbed and restless and would occasionally ask a probing, painful question.  Finally, the little boy reached out his hand through the darkness and placed it on his father's face asking, "Daddy, is your face toward me?"  Given assurance both verbally and by his own touch that his father's face was indeed toward him, the little boy said, "Daddy, if your face is toward me, I think I can go to sleep now."  And in a little while he was quiet.

The father then lay there in the darkness, and in childlike faith he lifted up his own needy heart to his Father in heaven and prayed, "Oh God, the way is dark, and I confess that right now I don't see my way through.  But if your face is toward me, somehow I think I can make it."

From "Do Your Best and Trust God With the Rest" (Jim Moore)

The good news of our faith is whatever might be going on in our lives, God's face is toward us and he is with us!  I hope to see you Sunday as we continue the series on "The Christian Vocabulary".  This week the word is LOVE.

Blessings,
Russell

CONFIRMATION CLASSES
Sundays at 9:30 am

The 2017 Confirmation class has started! All youth 5th grade and older who have not yet been confirmed are invited to participate as confirmands. All youth who have been through confirmation before are invited to attend and participate as confirmation mentors.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the liturgy and the legacy of the Christian Church, and specifically the Methodist church. Confirmation is the opportunity for people to explore the roots of their beliefs, as well as to contemplate their spiritual beliefs and their place in the church. It's important to keep in mind that confirmation class is the beginning of a process of spiritual growth. At the end of the class, confirmands will make the individual decision about whether or not they are personally ready to be confirmed in the church.

Confirmation Class dates are as follows:

Sunday, March 5 at 9:30 am
Sunday, March 12 at 9:30 am
Sunday, March 19 at 9:30 am
Sunday, March 26 at 9:30 am

Make-Up Session and Review:   Sunday, April 9 at 9:30 am
Confirmation Ceremony:   Sunday, April 9 at 10:30 am

Several of you have expressed an interest in participating in confirmation, which is great! Russell and Sarah need to get materials ordered and prepared, so will need to get a (somewhat) firm class list together. Please email Sarah to sign up at youth@evergreenumc.org.
