AUGUST CARE CART
The BackPack Program provides backpacks filled with non-perishable, child-friendly and nutritious food to children who are food insecure.  The idea for this program originated from a school nurse in Arizona who determined students were coming to her with symptoms of hunger, dizziness and stomachaches.  There are now over 3,600 backpack programs throughout the country.  Here in Laramie, students in need are provided with enough food to see them through the weekend.  "Kids who are hungry" is the only criteria and are referred to the program by teachers, principals, or counselors.  In the past, about 110 bags a week were distributed by the program. This month's Care Cart is seeking both backpacks and foodstuffs: all-juice sippy boxes/bags, such as apple juice; canned ravioli; cereal that isn't heavily sugared; oatmeal; macaroni and cheese; cookies; chunky soups; granola bars; peanut butter; microwavable or canned spaghetti with meatballs; raisins; jelly; crackers; packets of instant mashed potatoes; canned chicken; canned fruit; canned vegetables; pudding cups; canned beef or chicken stews; banana chips; applesauce cups; canned mild chili with beans; Beanie Weenies; canned macaroni and beef; healthy trail mix, microwavable popcorn, and  healthy breakfast bars.

GREAT BANQUET
September 14-17 for Men and Sept 21-24 for Women:  WHAT?  The GREAT BANQUET weekend!!
You won't want to miss this.  Here   are the details: This is an invitation to participate in a fabulous get close to Jesus event that will be held in Robinson, Illinois.  This event is called the Great Banquet and is based on Jesus' parable in Luke 14:16-24, where Jesus compares heaven to a banquet held by a king.  When it came time for the banquet to begin messages were sent to all the invited guests but those invited all had excuses for not attending. So the king sent his servants out into the highways and byways to gather in all who were willing to attend.   My husband, Monte, and I are both part of the Great Banquet community and we have long hoped to get a group started here in Wyoming.  But before we can, we need to have a group of people attend an event. I would like to invite you to attend the Great Banquet of God.
The Elohim Great Banquet community, of which Monte and I are a part, are willing to help cover the costs of anyone attending from Wyoming.  We would leave here by car or van( if needed) on the Wednesday before, travel to IL and participate in the weekend before returning the Monday following.  The only expense to attendees would be a few meals going and returning.
To date we have three committed going to the Men's Banquet and 2 committed going to the Women's banquet.  I would like to take many more on these remarkable weekends.  If you are interested in experiencing a faith building, Divinely focused event, please talk to me.  For more information about Great Banquet go to  https://www.lampstand.net/

Presbyterian Peacemaking Program
For your personal consideration, a Presbyterian conference on peacemaking will be held in Israel and Palestine from April 29 through May 12, 2018.  If interested, applications are due by November 15, 2017.  Applicants will be placed in a small group that will engage in preparation prior to the conference.   Conference attendees will be inspired by the stories of Christian peacemakers in the Holy Land.  They will walk in the footsteps of Jesus while encountering Palestinians and Israelis.  They will meet with Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders to experience various theologies and study peacemaking practices within the framework of PCUSA policy.  They will depart with knowing the necessary framework for actions to lead to a just and lasting peace in the region.  Additionally, regional tours will take place.  The cost of $2600 includes double occupancy rooms (11 nights), all meals, tips, all tours, the conference program, and in-country ground transportation.  Single occupancy is available for an additional charge and the cost does not include air transportation.  Additional information such as a sample conference schedule and information from past conferences is available at presbyterianmission.org/mosaicor by calling the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program at 800-728-7228 x5805.

HELP NEEDED NOW
The Downtown Clinic is looking for help now in three areas:
  • They need someone with a truck or trailer to take a DTC volunteer to Cheyenne to pick up some donated rebar and pipe
  • They need someone with a truck to pick up some donated lumber from Bloedorn's here in Laramie
  • They need woodworkers to build two benches from the donated lumber
  • Also, the Downtown Clinic (DTC) is enlarging their garden area. In previous years, DTC patients have maintained two raised gardens located behind the clinic where they raised vegetables and some flowers.  The produce and flowers were then shared with the other patients.  This year, an AmeriCorps volunteer assigned to DPC has gotten large amounts of soil, rocks, wire, and other supplies donated and is working diligently to enlarge the growing area as well as beautify it with rock walls.  The walls are basically rocks in metal cages. There are opportunities to help out with this effort.  Please let Nancy Lick ( sadielady2@charter.net ) know if you can help DTC finish this project before the first snow and she will let you know the work schedule.  Meanwhile, feel free to stop by via the alley and check it out - the tomatoes are doing pretty well.
Please call or e-mail Nancy Lick if you can help with any of these requests:  307-560-3293 or  sadielady2@charter.net

Vi Baker, Nancy Fillion, and Nancy Lick represented our congregation at the DTC Volunteer Recognition Dinner on August 27th .   It was an uplifting experience and it is apparent that UPC's Client Outreach Program continues to make a difference in the lives of the Clinic's patients.  The only sad note is that the terrific Clinic Coordinator is leaving after 14 years --  Letha has been the glue that helped many of the clinic's patients keep their dire situation manageable.  She'll be missed.
Brent Vernon & Sam
Here at UPC we will be hosting Brent Vernon and Sam.  Brent Vernon is a singer, songwriter, ventriloquist, author and illustrator.  Join us for a night of fun on August 24th at 7:00 pm. The Brent and Sam show asks for a free will offering.  That's what he survives on.  Also, if someone wants to house him for the night he welcomes that too!
International Student Giveaway
The UWYO International Student Giveaway will be held on  Saturday, August 26, in the park area across from UPC's northern parking lot.  It was really fun last year dealing with students from Nepal who had only been in the country 1 day or trying to convince students from tropical lands that they really needed that heavy parka or quilt.  We need volunteers with pickups or trailers at  6:45 a.m. to empty out our donated items in Marcia's Closet in the lower level of the church and move the stuff to the site.  We need volunteers to help set out all of the donated items.  Volunteers with pick-ups or trailers are needed throughout the event to transport the students back to their homes, if needed. Volunteers are also needed to help the students "shop" and/or stay around to help clean up.  Please volunteer for all or part of the time by letting Nancy Lick, Wayne Karberg, or Vi Baker know or by calling the office and leaving a message.
Women's Retreat
Women's Retreat to be held Aug. 11-13, 2017, at Camp Story.  The theme is "Joy:  How to Rejoice in Any Situation".  We welcome all women and their friends to attend this event which is inspiring and refreshing. Registration forms are in the church office.
Save the Date
As close to the Feast of St. Francis - an openhearted blessing of the animals at the Alice Hardie Stevens Center on October 1st at 3PM.  We will gather to affirm together that we can bless these dear ones of God's creating, as they are a blessing to us.
