Come sing with Summer Choir!

Summer Choir Singers are any singers who wish to sing in the choir on any chosen Summer Sunday morning. They are welcome to come to the Chancel promptly at 10:00 a.m. and rehearse that morning’s anthem. Summer singers wear no robes, sing the Anthem, then join family and/or friends in the congregation for the remainder of the service.  All singers are welcome!

This Sunday, the choir sings "Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates," arranged by William Mathias.

Supper & Substance Monday, July 24
First UP: "Fences"

2017 marks the tenth year for our summer dinner and movie discussion at UPC! This year, the Christian Formation Committee offers four movies--all illuminating themes of life and faith, and serving as visual parables that help viewers see how God’s messages of hope and love are revealed through contemporary films. Dinner is prepared by different groups at UPC, and donations go to that group’s chosen special service project. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m., with discussion following at 6:30 p.m. A separate movie event is offered each Monday for children. Cost for the dinner is $7.00 for adults, and $3.00 for children ages 3-12.

You must sign up and pay for dinner in advance! This is important, as those preparing the meal must know how many to prepare for! Look for the sign-up table in the courtyard after church on Sundays. And of course you are welcome to come for the discussion if you do not wish to join us for dinner!

If you want to participate in the first Supper & Substance and will not be in church Sunday, July 16, please email the church office at [email protected] by this Friday. You may pay at the door July 17.

UP next, on July 24, is Arrival, an emotionally gripping science fiction movie from 2016. Arrival tells the story of a huge global event, personalized through the experience of one character. Louise (Amy Adams) is a linguist and university professor who, we learn through a series of introductory scenes, has suffered an intense personal loss. When 12 strange alien ships appear at seemingly random spots across the globe, Louise is hired by the army — along with a physicist, Ian (Jeremy Renner) — to translate the interstellar visitors’ speech, communicate with them, and understand the purpose for their visit. Scenes of Louise at work are intercut with her memories, which influence her ability to understand the aliens, called Heptapods. The discussion will be led by Pastor Matt.

Church Stories in the Bible
Summer Sermon Series
You may have noticed in the last few weeks, UPC pastoral staff are a bit outside of the lectionary texts appointed for Sundays, offering sermons from the Bible about how the church is called to be the church.

As you travel this summer, don't miss an "episode" in this series. There are three ways to hear again past episodes:

Thank You!

The Congregational Committee extends many thanks to the following:
Linda Templin—Session Commendation for extended years of service on the Membership Ministry Team

Ken McWilliams—Extended years’   service coordinating Courtyard Rangers

Liz Wright—Designing and continuation of staffing Welcome Wagon and preparation of Visitors Welcome Gifts

Tyson Payne—Organizing the new Congregational Connections Committee as Co-Chair

We have exciting plans for 2017-2018. Watch for opportunities to get involved.

Highlight:
Heritage Ministry Team
A vital part of the Congregational Connections Committee is the Heritage Ministry Team, with early work by Rosanne Becker as founding chair, and continuing with Sharyn Reynolds as current chair.

Other Heritage Ministry Teams members include Carol Keller, Suzanne Wofford, Johnnie Overton, Eve Lawrence, Betsy Boyt, Karen Werkenthin, and Madelyn Mitchell. In our 125th anniversary year, they have begun a locator project for memorial items like brick pavers in the central and north courtyards, collected and archived historical documents and photographs, and outfitted a Heritage Room on the Lower Level to preserve and curate UPC records. They have exciting plans for providing digital access to UPC records later this year. The Heritage Committee represents connecting the past with the present and looking toward the future - a real Congregational Connection!!

UPLift Needs Next Week
Every Tuesday morning, UPC volunteers provide some food and coffee, hygiene items, and occasional financial assistance for our clients. While all donations are welcome at any time, here are some items to consider bringing to worship this week.

Thank you for your incredible support of this UPC mission!!

  • feminine products
  • razors

Hygiene Supply Summer Drive

The UPC Youth Ministry collects travel sized hygiene supplies year round, but the summers are a great time to help us stock back up. When you're traveling this summer either for vacation or for work, please remember to collect the travel sized hygiene supplies—from hotels, airplanes, wherever—and drop them off in the basket outside John Leedy’s office. These supplies go a long way to help those in need. Our VBS kids made up more than 60 hygiene kits last week—thank you, Heroes!—so our supply levels are a bit down. Please be sure that bottles are unopened / unused and that toothbrushes are individually wrapped. Thanks for your help!

SAVE THE DATE—Micah 6 Sunday, July 30!
On July 30, University Christian Church will host the Annual Meeting of Micah 6 of Austin with a reception at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Micah 6 Board Members and members of the Micah 6 congregations are invited to gather at UCC to celebrate the M6 Food Pantry and the Sunday Street Youth Drop in Center. Did you know that the M6 Food Pantry is the largest in Travis County? And the Drop in Center has served more than 7,800 hot meals to Austin’s street youth? You will learn even more about this vital ministry at the reception. We will also get a chance to meet the new M6 Executive Director, the Reverend Barry Smith.
The reception will be hosted by UCC. We need volunteers to bring finger sandwiches, chips, veggies, and / or cookies. Please let Sandy Hardin (UCC) know what you will be able to bring. You can email her at [email protected]. These are exciting times in the Micah 6 ministry. We look forward to seeing you at the reception!
