LEGAL ISSUE THREATENS FUTURE OF PUBLIC PARKS

Please Take A Moment to Show Your Support for Keeping Our Parks Open

When budget cuts threatened the very existence of public parks at Corps of Engineers recreational areas nationwide, the Corps found a solution by creating partnerships with non-profit organizations willing to operate the parks using revenue generated by the parks, thus reducing the need for federal funding.

These agreements kept 34 parks at eight lake projects across the United States -- including five parks at our own Lake Thurmond -- open to provide activities for hundreds of thousands of Americans. Although the concept proved to be a resounding success, a recent internal review of legal statutes determined that the Corps does not have the authority to allow the cooperating associations to retain user fees and use them to pay for day-to-day operation of the parks.

As a result, these agreements were abruptly cancelled and, once again, the future of our great public parks is threatened. We need your help! Please take a moment to ask members of Congress and the Senate to take action to keep these agreements in place and keep your parks open.
