A note from the Art Teacher:

 Hello UPark community,

My name is Pablo Rivera and I am the new art teacher. I am very excited to help the students at UPark develop creative skills and a sense of wonder for learning. I currently have two ways for the UPark community to help chip in and take part in transforming the art room into a creative laboratory.  The first way is to give supplies, supplies, supplies. Everything I need should come from recycled materials and should not be purchased.
The list:
Cardboard in all its forms. Cardboard tubes, boxes, toilet paper rolls, etc.
Styrofoam- this is used for building structures
Old neglected plastic toys- the toys should be easily deconstructed, and not all metal.
Anything small that you think the kids can use to create. Examples are small tin boxes used for mints, old door knobs, beads, old/cheap jewelry, etc.

The second way to give is participate in the DonorsChoose.org project for the art room. These supplies are more technology based and thus more expensive. My hope is that by combining small donations we can make a huge impact in the art room.  Here is the link:  Help Blur the Lines Between Technology and Art

Thank you in advance!

From the Computer Lab:
We are beginning heavy keyboarding emphasis in grades 3-5 in preparation for the PARCC testing this Spring.  These tests are totally computerized and involve a good deal of typing by students.  You can help prepare your child, no matter what age, by encouraging practice sessions several times each week for about 10-15 minutes.

Grades 2-5 use the following URL:     upark.typingclub.com            (Students must know their user name and ID number to use Typing Club)

Grade K will be starting the following site in about another week:  http://annrymer.com/keyseeker/

First grade will be starting this site in about another week:  http://bigbrownbear.co.uk/learntotype/
Please note:  Students in K-2 may do the "hunt and peck" method.  Second graders begin learning correct positioning in about March.  Students in 3-5 know, and should use, correct hand position.
Thank you for your support!

From the Nurse's Office:

Initial testing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates the increase in pediatric viral respiratory illness may be caused by the recent outbreak of human enterovirus 68.  Colorado has been especially hard hit with this virus and it has been noted in a number of other states as well.  This virus initially presents similar to the common cold with symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose as well as body aches.  Unlike the common cold, it can escalate quickly and cause significant respiratory compromise and hospitalization.  Our students with asthma are especially vulnerable.  Students with asthma are encouraged to be vigilant in taking their asthma controlling medications.  Since this is a virus and is not treatable with standard antibiotic therapy, reinforcement of some basic self- care standards needs to be done.

PTA News:

Thank you to everyone who attended the first PTA meeting on Tuesday!  We had a great turnout and are looking forward to a great year.  We voted on and approved this year's budget, which includes paying for Promethean Boards in Kindergarten, 4th, and 5th grades!

The Apple Campaign made $13,300 on Back to School Night!  That is amazing, but we still have a long way to go by October 31.  Please consider donating any amount by dropping a check off in the office made out to UPark PTA, or donating online here: www.cheddarup.com/member/tabs/1409072440056

You can also ask your company to match your donation.  We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.  Please contact Stephanie Treusein at 720-231-9955 or smtreusein@yahoo.com  for details.

It's not too late to join the PTA.  We are open to everyone and would love your involvement!  Please join here: www.cheddarup.com/member/tabs/1409073565417
