Although Cookie the dwarf horse and her best friend, Joan the sheep, have
only been at our barn for a couple of months, it feels like they've been here forever. They're a cherished part of the Heartland family, and we know Cookie will be a favorite with our campers this summer.
After Cookie arrived, we found out she was severely underweight due to her
difficulty eating, and she soon developed sinus infection symptoms.
A vet exam complete with dental x-rays confirmed that Cookie's teeth and extreme
underbite were the culprit. The vet
was able to remove two of Cookie's baby teeth at
her initial appointment, but
ultimately
referred us to an out-of-town specialist with experience working with dwarf horses. So far, Cookie has had her two remaining baby teeth extracted, several sharp points on other teeth filed down, and two adult teeth
removed. Because
her
mouth
is so small (and she

has the same amount of teeth that are the same size as teeth in an average 1,000 pound horse), her surgeries are much more complicated.
Cookie has been a wonderful and sweet patient, but she has run into complications post-surgery that require IV antibiotics and round-the-clock care. Plus, she will need to return to get additional teeth extracted once she recovers from this surgery.
We are asking for your support to help sweet Cookie heal. We know these dental procedures will allow Cookie to be a happier and healthier horse, but specialized vet care comes at a price. Will you make a donation to Cookie's vet care fund?
Any amount is appreciated. Cookie (and Joan) thank you!
