Balboa Park and Uptown Community Plan
There are two serious preservation and quality of life issues on the council docket this Monday, November 14.
Please see below for how you can help save Balboa Park and protect the Uptown Community Plan.
Oppose Massive Construction Project for Balboa Park
The Plaza de Panama project returns to the City Council
Monday, November 14 at 2pm
. See council docket
, ITEM-150, beginning on page 2: Balboa Park Plaza de Panama Project-Cooperation Agreement, Authorizing a Construction Contract, and related funding actions. (Balboa Park Community Area. District 3.)
This irreparably destructive and project has escalated to an under estimated $80,000,000. A recap of the sham hearing on October 27 can be read
We are urging everyone to attend this meeting and testify in numbers that cannot be ignored by the City Council. Not only has the City ignored a multitude of changed circumstances, and tens of thousands of San Diegans this project is an economically and environmentally irresponsible use of city funds and introduces paid parking to a free and public park. Stand with SOHO, and these organizations and agencies, and protest this senseless and unintelligent project.

Uptown Community Plan Hijacked by Developer Interests
After working with the community for close to 10 years on a collaborative plan update, the City Planning staff is now supporting developer interests and putting at risk the historic character and heart of the Uptown community. Join SOHO on Monday, November 14 at 2 pm (202 C Street, 12th floor) and oppose this plan! (See council docket HERE, Item 201, beginning on page 7)
The community plan update is a road map to help plan for the future, which is why it's so important to get this done right. However, the City intends to allow for more density without providing protections for historic resources, which does not comply with CEQA. Entire blocks, such as within the Hillcrest Commercial Core, could be entirely scraped due to density incentives. Mitigation to implement the identified historic districts is necessary to protect the character of Uptown from eroding away. Historic resources are a defining feature of Uptown and the City Council must plan how to conserve this character and sense of place for our future.
How You Can Help
SOHO needs your support now. Let the City Council know that you depend on them to follow CEQA and protect our historic resources through the establishment of historic districts.
Write to the City Council HERE to support the establishment of historic districts in the Uptown community. We also need you to attend and testify before the City Council in person on Monday, November 14 at 2pm (202 C Street, 12th Floor), or if you do not wish to speak, we still need you there, and you can plan to cede your public comment time to SOHO.
