US Route 89 Project 2010 Highlights
by James Cowlin

Arizona Centennial Legacy Project
The US Route 89 Project was designated as an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission in March. To celebrate Arizona's 100th birthday we will be highlighting the history of Arizona's Main Street throughout 2011.

Road Trip Map Book
As a resource for travelers planning a road trip on highway 89, we compiled the Road Trip Guides from our website into two handy versions early in 2010. First was a downloadable version in PDF format, followed by a magazine-format printed version. In December, we released a completely revised digital version with links to travel and information websites. In 2011, we will be publishing the next issue of the US Route 89 magazine featuring the national parks and monuments along the road.

Mexico to Canada and Back Road Trip
On May 17th, we embarked on our most ambitious US 89 road trip. Over the next 32 days we drove from the Mexican border to the Canadian border and back. We put 6,000 miles on our trusty Honda Element pulling the Pod, our teardrop trailer. We had special sponsorship from twelve members of the US Route 89 Appreciation Society who contributed $1 a mile to cover 1,450 miles of the trip.

The trip was very productive. I shot over 2,000 photographs, all digital for the first time. My transition from film to digital has been gradual but the newest generation of cameras produces images that are a close match to the medium format film I have shot for years. I used the same camera to record short video interviews with some of the fascinating people we met. Since returning from the trip, Barbara has been working on a new series of water reflection paintings from Pea Blanca Lake in southern Arizona and Pinnacle Lake in Utah.

Online
We have expanded our presence on the World Wide Web with the creation of a blog. The initial purpose was to record the progress of the Spring 2010 Road Trip and we continue to post updates on the project. We will be expanding our use of the blog in 2011 to bring you more news and information to make your road trips more enjoyable. If you use a blog reader, such as Google Reader, subscribe to usroute89.com to be notified when there is a new post.

On the US Route 89 Appreciation Society website, we've added a new feature to the Road Trip Guides: Artist Portfolios. The work of artists whose art is related to US 89 are displayed under the appropriate guide. We hope these portfolios will add to your appreciation of the unique qualities of highway 89.

We are also pleased that fellow travelers have added their photographs and stories to the Road Trip Guides. We have highlighted a number of user contributions in previous newsletters. You can easily find new user stories by checking the What's New Page under the About the 89 Project tab in the navigation bar.

Finally, I have created a new website exclusively for my photographs. The first galleries on the new site are from the US Route 89 project. The site is aimed at making it easier for you to purchase prints or to license the use of the photographs online and in publications. There is even special pricing to allow personal use of the US 89 photographs on your own website or blog. Click here to visit James Cowlin Photographs.

Best of ASMP
The project was included among the American Society of Media Photographs Best of 2010. ASMP is the leading organization for professional photographers and I have been a member for over 30 years. It was an honor to have my work recognized by my friends and colleagues.

Appreciation Society Membership
The Appreciation Society grew by 25% in individual memberships. The Town of Clarkdale and Clarkdale Museum is the latest Civic and Cultural Organization to show support for promoting travel on the west's most western highway, joining other Arizona communities such as Page and Yarnell.

We have initiated new membership options for individuals with great new benefits in each category. Take a look at the chart below and consider joining or upgrading your membership.

Thank you for for being a part of the US Route 89 project.
