Construction is a Teaching Moment in South HS Physics
Lyric Cairns, South HS physics teacher, integrates the building construction into her lessons. She explains,

"We looked at the trusses and drew a free body diagram to analyze how the load (including the structure, desks, people, etc.) is distributed and supported.  We talked about the benefit of cross bracing to distribute load and what it means to have translational equilibrium.

We looked at the crane and talked about how it needs to use forces and distances (torque) to prevent rotation and failure.  We drew a free body diagram to analyze which forces try to rotate the crane clockwise and which forces try to rotate the crane counterclockwise and how rotational equilibrium is maintained while lifting heavy objects."

Great going!
