Nutrena: Managing Your Horse in Hot Weather

Horses really suffer during extremely hot weather. The thermal neutral zone is a range of  ambient temperatures where they are most comfortable and do the best. Horses' thermal neutral zone is lower than ours. We are most comfortable in the 50s thru 70s whereas horses are 20 to 30 degrees lower. When any animal is within their thermal neutral zone they are more efficient at maintaining body temperature. When they are outside that zone they must burn more energy to warm their self in cold weather or cool their self in hot weather. So they feel better and operate better within that thermal neutral zone. The problem is that in the Southwest horses are usually operating at high ambient temperatures particularly with all of our summertime activities. Add to that is the heat that is generated during muscular activity which is a problem in hot weather. The relative humidity also is a big factor. Lack of air movement can contribute to the problem also.

Horsemanship Stable Challenge

For the second year USHJA will run the 30-Day Horsemanship Stable Challenge, which will begin June 15 and run through July 15. To be eligible to win our unique sponsor prize package each trainer* will need at least three junior and/or amateur students to take the online Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Practice Quiz presented by Sweet Briar College between June 15 and July 15. At the end of the 30-day challenge, the three top scores under each trainer will be averaged to provide an overall score and the highest scoring trainer in each zone wins the awards package.

The trainer inspired award package will include a USHJA Trainer Certification Program Manual, polo wraps, grooming brush and a hoof pick, one year free subscription from EquestrianCoach.com, and gifts from Sweet Briar College, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital and Veterinary Pharmacy, Nutrena, Charles Owen, Shapley's, Perfect Products and Standlee.

USHJA hopes that with this firsthand experience of the challenge, trainers will encourage their students to participate in the Horsemanship Quiz Challenge program presented by Sweet Briar College in which USHJA members under 21 years of age test their horsemanship knowledge and may have the opportunity to compete in the Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Finals.

10 Commandments of Good Hooves and

Equine Health

This article is presented to Educational Partners of the American & Canadian Associations of Professional  Farriers. For additional information regarding equine hoofcare partners of the AAPF/CAPF are encouraged to visit their website - www.ProfessionalFarriers.com

The critical results of nutritional problems a farrier sees are cracking of the hoof wall, scaly, dry hooves, hollow wall and hoof wall infection, commonly known as "white line disease."

Possible Causes

  1. Look for the cause of the sheared or cracked hoof wall; this is generally caused by an out-of-balance condition.
  2. Not disinfecting stalls.
  3. Feeding excess amounts of sweet feed.
  4. Over-deworming and not rotating de-wormers.
  5. Lack of or insufficient amounts of iodine, copper, salt and other vitamins and minerals. Biotin and methionine alone is not the complete answer.
