USO Great Lakes Serves Up Authentic Chicago Hot Dogs
"Put the ketchup down," could be heard ringing through the halls of USO Great Lakes as hungry guests built their own perfect Chicago-style hotdogs. On May 24th, USO Great Lakes opened its doors to 350 service members and their families for "Authentic Chicago Hot Dog Night."

Tyson Foods donated over 500 premium all beef hotdogs. Alpha Baking Company provided Chicago-style poppy-seed buns. Cases of ketchup and mustard were provided by Kraft/Heinz and Vienna Beef provided Chicago Hotdog Décor. All this would not have been possible without USO Great Lakes volunteer, Bruce Nathanson, who created the event and helped to solicit donations!

Thank you to Bruce Nathanson and our friends at Tyson Foods, Alpha Baking Company, Kraft/Heinz and Vienna Beef for their support of USO of Illinois.
USO Rock Island Honors Flag Day
June 14, 1775, the United State Army was officially founded, and our nation adopts the first United States Flag. USO of Illinois staff, volunteers and committee members celebrated the 243rd Army Birthday at USO Rock Island in honor of Flag Day. The group served a No-Dough lunch to 60 service members from the 2/211th and 248th Iowa Army National Guard, located in Davenport, IA. After lunch, the group was treated to a tour of the facility including a peek inside a F-Model CH-47 Chinook and LUH72 Helicopter!

Thank you to the Iowa Army National Guard, Captain Chris Gericke and 1SG Layne Marti for helping USO of Illinois celebrate Flag Day!
Elk Lodge of Joliet Makes Service Members' Day
with Donations to USO Midway
USO of Illinois relies on the support of our dedicated volunteers and supporters to create a "Home Away from Home" for our service members and their families. Every month, Penny Burns, of Elks Lodge of Joliet, IL #296, makes a trip to Sam's Club to buy over $300 worth of food, snacks and drinks to donate to USO Midway. Penny, a longstanding member of the Elks, helps USO and other organizations across the United States with donations of needed items. The Elks Lodge of Joliet's contributions to USO Midway helps to support traveling service men and women, their dependents and sailors graduating from Boot Camp at Naval Station Great Lakes.

USO of Illinois salutes Penny Burns and Elks Lodge #296 for their continued generosity and support.
USO O'Hare Reunites Families with
their Deployed Loved Ones
Saying goodbye is never easy, but USO O'Hare staff and volunteers know how to make a welcome home special. USO Welcome Home Brigade provides military dependents the opportunity to meet their service member returning home from deployment at the arrival gate. In April, USO Welcome Home Brigade volunteers helped facilitate a heartfelt welcome home for 15 sailors from Naval Station Great Lakes returning from a deployment in South America. Hugs, tears and joy were shared by all as the sailors reunited with their loved ones. In total, USO Welcome Home Brigade volunteers have helped reunite 17 families with their loved ones in 2018, including two Naval Corpsmen returning home from a deployment in Bahrain.

Bikes for Military Kids
Rotary International and Hinsdale Rotary Club teamed up to provide over 100 bikes for military families on Armed Forces Day. USO Teen/Tweens Become Ultimate Ninjas
On Sunday, May 20, nearly 30 military kids aged 11-18 attended USO Teen/Tween at Ultimate Ninjas Libertyville. Inspired by the hit television show "American Ninja Warrior" on NBC, Ultimate Ninjas offers a wide variety of obstacle courses for kids of every skill level. Agility courses, swinging ropes, monkey bars, quintuple steps, climbing and warped walls tested the Teens and Tweens strength and agility. Military youth had a fun time making new friends, testing their physical, mental abilities and becoming ultimate ninjas!

Thank you to the Chicago Bears for supporting our military youth programs and making this event possible.
