Shell Says Oil's Not Going Anywhere
Bloomberg.com, March 9, 2018: There'll be at least one home still welcoming fossil fuels in the face of a growing threat from cleaner resources, according to Royal Dutch Shell Plc.  Heavy industry relies on hydrocarbons to generate extremely high temperatures and chemical reactions, according to Mark Quartermain, vice president of crude oil trading and supply at the company. Many processes used in iron, steel, cement and plastics factories can't be electrified at all, and even if they could be, cannot be done at a viable cost in the foreseeable future, he said at a conference in Singapore.
A growing body of research is painting a bearish picture for oil beyond the next 20 years, as more electric vehicles hit roads across the globe and engines become more efficient. Rapid adoption could mean demand peaks by the 2030s, according to Bank of America and BP Plc, a prospect that's likely to worry institutional investors in the energy industry. On Friday, the International Energy Agency said oil demand from passenger cars will peak in 2020.   Read more...

Sale of Rosneft stake to CEFC in doubt after turmoil at Chinese group

Intellinews.com, March 13, 2018: Russia's major privatisation deal of 2017, in which the country's largest oil company Rosneft was to sell a stake to China's China Energy Company (CEFC), is in turmoil after it appears the Chinese firm doesn't have the money to pay, Bloomberg and Vedomosti daily said on March 13, citing the China Chengxin International Credit Rating agency.  Initially the Russian government claimed that  Rosneft sold a 19.5% stake to Glencore and Qatar's sovereign fund  in December 2016 for €10.5bn. However, it later became clear that the money raised was actually a loan.   Subsequently, Rosneft sold a 14.16% stake to  China's CEFC for $9.1bn in September 2017 , the biggest ever investment by a Chinese company into a Russian company.  But now reportedly CEFC is having problems financing the deal. Unnamed sources told Vedomosti that CEFC has to pay $1.8bn by April 1, and the remaining $7.3bn by September 2018.   Read more...

Royal Dutch Shell doubles lubricant sales in Russia in four years

Reuters, March 14, 2018: TORZHOK, Russia (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell, which was forced to limit its presence in Russia's upstream sector because of Western sanctions, has seen its lubricant sales in the country double since 2014, the head of one of its plants there said.Shell launched its Torzhok lubricants plant in Russia's northwest in 2012, with the aim of producing up to 200 million liters a year. The factory plans to reach that capacity in 2027, and currently produces around 90 million liters a year.
"Compared to 2014, we have seen our (sales) portfolio almost doubling," Maxim Solovyov, head of the Torzhok plant, told Reuters in an interview.  Apart from its own lubricants production at Torzhok, Shell imports another 30 million liters per year into Russia from its plants elsewhere to sell them in the region.  After the rouble weakened amid sanctions and lower oil prices three years ago, lubricant production for Shell in Russia became more profitable, Solovyov said, as the company's global costs are in U.S. dollars.   Read more...

Russia's commercial fleet to grow at 30 to 40 aircraft per year

Rusaviainsider.com, March 13, 2018:   Russia's combined commercial aircraft fleet is expected to grow at a rate of between 30 and 40 airframes per year between 2018 and 2020, Andrey Kramarenko, a lead expert at the Institute for Transport Economics and Transport Policy Studies revealed at the recent MRO Russia  & CIS convention in Moscow.  The strengthening of the national currency is expected to spur demand for long-haul travel, which can lead to a slight increase in the number of widebody aircraft operated by Russian airlines. At present, the widebody segment is quite narrow compared to the country's combined narrowbody fleet, and stands at a meagre 82 aircraft, mostly operated by Aeroflot Group's carriers and charter airlines. Kramarenko believes this number is too low. Last year the share of widebodies in the total number of newly delivered airplanes did not exceed 13% Read more...
