The Campaign for
UU Savannah 2018-19

On April 1st we kicked off our campaign for the the UU Church for the coming fiscal year. We are a cooperative and rely on the pledges made by every member and friend of the church to keep the ministries going and growing. We have been changing lives inside this congregation and in the larger Savannah community....time to redouble our investment.

I am really proud and grateful after our ambitious April campaign. Thank you to all who have answered the call so far. We have passed $185,000 which is 77% of our goal.

Like I asked in worship not long ago, join with me in imagining where you would invest an extra ten thousand or twenty thousand or fifty thousand if we would be able to raise it. Dreams I know so far: A Rahn Hall Mini Makeover, Roof and Apse Repairs, New Audio Speakers for the Sanctuary, Raises for staff, Kitchen Equipment, Scholarships to The Mountain, A Guest Poets Series, Hospitality at more events, New HVAC in Classrooms, Video Technology for Sanctuary...

Grief and Loss Workshop
From your Pastoral Care Committee
May 19th, 10:00 - 11:30 am, Rahn Hall

Most of us have had to deal with the grief that follows the loss of  a loved one. In many instances, our sadness can be long-lasting. On Saturday, May 19, 10:00-11:30 AM, Reverend Holland Morgan of Hospice Savannah will be leading a workshop for all who are interested in exploring ways of dealing with this difficult aspect of our lives.

The Pastoral Care Committee welcomes all who attend to gather at 9:30 AM in Rahn Hall for coffee and pastries before the workshop begins. You may register online here or sign up at the engagement table in Rahn Hall..
UU Book Club
May 22nd , 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Rahn Hall. Second and Fourth Tuesdays of the month.

The UU Book Club reads both fiction and non-fiction, confronting topics like race, religious pluralism, social justice, violence, native peoples, American exceptionalism, health, gender, and the environment.

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.

If you would like to join us in our readings, but can not attend book club meetings, please sign up for a weekly email. For all things Book Club related, please email Kelsey Buckner at  kelseykate@gmail.com

Social Justice and Action

Volunteer Testamonial - Jody Lane

From among the many opportunities that the church offers, one that my husband and I often choose is to make a couple loaves of sandwiches for our homeless community. We sign up for a date and bring the sandwiches to church that Sunday morning. We know those sandwiches, along with other sandwiches, soups, and salads made by our church members will be served by yet other fellow church members that evening at the Inner City Night Shelter . This is a simple act that fits our schedule and has a direct impact for the eighteen or twenty people who will eat our two loaves of sandwiches. We thank the Social Justice ministry for making it easy to lend a helping hand!

Inner City Night Shelter
The third Sunday of the month,  May 20th  is coming up for our Sunday to provide soup and sandwiches for the Inner City Night Shelter and to serve that meal in the afternoon (4:30pm). If you would like to help, please sign at the engagement table in Rahn Hall.

Wear Orange - weekend of June 1 - 3
Everytown against gun violence is helping us to become more active to fight against gun violence in our communities. On the weekend of June 1-3, there will be nationwide rallies and marches to help bring about changes in laws and people's awareness of the increasing evil of guns used to hurt people. People will wear orange that weekend to join others in a recognized color for gun violence prevention.

Cardboard City and Family Promise
You are invited to two inspirational and informative sessions hosted by Family Promise to help people deal with the homeless. The sessions will be Friday, June 1st at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at the Benedictine Milatary School on Seawright Dr. For information and to register for either session call Family Promise at 912-790-9446.
