"Invisible Diversity"
Sermon by Rev. Aaron McEmrys, Senior Minister

There are now two yoga classes to choose from each week. Both classes offer a form of movement that is well-suited for meditation. You will explore practices that energize and strengthen, help release deep-seated tension, and cultivate a sense of presence and well-being. The classes are designed to be inclusive for all levels, and last about 50 minutes. The classes are offered freely so that no one is denied access to the class. Your donation helps cover the cost of the room, and supports the teacher. For room location, check the room assignment flyer at the UUCA main entrance. For more information, Rita Moran at 301-452-8924 or [email protected].
Spreading the Love
Namaste card Have you picked up the latest Heart Balm cards yet? These little cards have messages of love, hope, and compassion printed over beautiful images that help convey the messages. The images were painted by UUCA artist Meika Ungricht. The cards are meant for handing out -- to spread the message of love -- a message our world needs to hear more than ever. You can certainly share them with those that are close to you, but please also pass them out to that stranger passing by -- or leave a few in the doctor's waiting room or leave with your tip at the restaurant -- you get the idea. It's a simple act love that sends a powerful message.

Louisiana Flood Relief
Photo: D.Grunfeld/The Times Picayune
The road to recovery following the historic-level floods that have devastated communities in Louisiana and parts of Mississippi will be a long one. Together, we can make a difference. Unitarian Universalists from around the world have asked our church in Baton Rouge - how can we help from afar? Based on their answer, UUCA's offering on August 28 will be split between two funds:
  • "UCBR Flood Fund" assists Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge members and friends of that church in flood recovery, especially those without flood insurance.
  • The "Together Baton Rouge fund" helps anyone who has been affected by floodwaters in the wider community.
DONATE NOW
Our Baton Rouge UU family writes: "Thank you for reaching out with your prayers, cares, and concerns" and gratefully receives financial gifts so desperately needed by so many.

Board of Trustees
August Board Meeting Focus: RE, VOICE Rally, and Black Lives Matter

The Board discussed three program topics at its August 2016 meeting: Religious Education progress and plans, a major upcoming VOICE rally, and effective UUCA solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

One year into her role as director of Lifespan Religious Education at UUCA, LeeAnn Williams discussed progress and opportunities in the RE program, referencing themes that emerged from the facilitated discussions the Board had with parents, teachers, and children in May about how to make religious education an essential part of an intergenerational religious community. Discussion findings are summarized in the Board Linkage Report. She is building relationships with families and the community and supporting RE volunteers with resources and training. LeeAnn highlighted progress in welcoming non-parent teachers to RE, and she described reshaping UUCA's RE as experiential learning rather than strictly academic learning. LeeAnn emphasized the importance of focusing RE on lifelong spirituality to fulfill UUCA's Connect, Grow, and Serve mission.

New UU - Saturday, September 17, 8:30 a.m. to noon
UUCA logo Unitarian Universalism is a way of thinking and being in the world. It is a faith discipline, enriched by faith traditions, that forms the foundation for a way to live this life. It matters how we conduct our lives and work to make the world a better place. Here at UUCA we are challenged to deepen our own faith principles and practices in response to our own experience and, whenever possible, to stand on the side of love. Find out more about Unitarian Universalism, and about UUCA, at our next New UU class. The class is free, but registration is required, click here. Free childcare is available on request. For childcare and more information, contact [email protected].
Covenant Groups - Beginning Soon!
Covenant Group image
UUCA's strong commitment to small group ministry has enriched hundreds of lives through our Covenant Groups. These small groups of 8 to 12, meet regularly throughout the church year and are led by trained facilitators. UUCA's Covenant Groups offers you the chance to connect, grow deeper, and offer service back to the community. Newer UUCAers form meaningful connections with others; longtime members enjoy exploring new learnings and deepening relationships.

Last year, many of our groups followed a series called Soul Matters. Rev. McEmrys' sermons follow the themes, and the readings, resources, and spiritual exercises are made available to UUCA's Soul Matters Covenant Groups. Other Covenant Groups follow their own readings or themes.

Online registration begins September 1. A registration table will be in Fellowship Hall after the services on September 11 and 18.
Covenant Group Facilitators Needed
We are accepting applications for Covenant Group facilitators for the new church year. Training is provided by the ministers. If you are interested, please contact [email protected].

Come From Away - Tuesday, Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m.
Come From Away On 9/11, over 6,000 people had to land in a small Canadian town of about that size due to the closing of all the airports in the states. The whole town had to come together to feed and house these people from all over the world. Ford's Theatre is presenting Come From Away, a musical based on the experience of this town. Come From Away honors the better angels of our nature, revealing hope and humanity in a time of darkness. The performance on September 6 is Interfaith Night and there will be a post-show discussion on Welcoming the Stranger. UUCA's Connectors and Sunday Morning Ambassadors invite you to attend at the group rate of $20 per person. Spots are still available. Please contact [email protected].
