Reflection...

We light our chalice for mothers and mothering;
to celebrate those who have taken on the task
of nurturing a young one -
baby, child, or youth - into adulthood;
to celebrate those who have nourished the light of truth and
compassion in growing minds and hearts;
to celebrate those who have committed time, money,
energy to the growth of others in this world.
We light our chalice to celebrate and hold dear this flame of love.

 - Deane Oliva

Friends,

When we finish this Sunday service and continue our journey of exploration through the eyes of the Women Transcendentalists, please join us to celebrate all of those people - mothers, fathers, siblings - who helped nurture the youngest and most vulnerable in our society and in the world.

A reminder that the Program Council meets at 9:00 a.m. this Sunday, and next Sunday, May 20, members will have a chance to meet candidates for the UUCGT Board and Leadership Development Committee, as well as review the proposed budget for 2018 to 2019.  There will be no Compassion study group these 2 weeks.

In blessing,...especially to those who have given of their time, talent and treasure to nurture UUCGT.

Rabbi Chava

Sunday Service
Sunday, May 13   -   Rabbi Chava Bahle, Margaret Wozniak
10:30 AM:  "Women Transcendentalists & Mother's Day "
  All Congregation Service
   (All ages are invited to remain in the service with their families)

Our discussion of the Transcendentalists would not be complete without the voices of the amazing and brave women who were welcomed as part of this movement.  Some of their names are known to us, some are lesser-known, but there are powerful lessons to be drawn from the teachings of these women.

Rabbi Chava will explore "From Suffrage to #MeToo" to look at the trajectory from the 19th century until today.

We will also be blessed with beautiful music for this Mother's Day service.

Suggested reading for families/parents this month

This month, I am suggesting a lovely read-aloud book for families as a follow-up to Harry Potter.  This book is filled with " magic, adventure, friendship, and even a dragon who can't fly!"

"Where the Mountain Meets the Moon"
by Grace Lin
*A Newbery Honor Book*

"In the Valley of Fruitless Mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man on the Moon to ask him how she can change her family's fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.
Grace Lin, author of the beloved  Year of the Dog and  Year of the Rat, returns with a wondrous story of adventure, faith, and friendship.  A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore,  Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a timeless story reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz.  Her beautiful illustrations, printed in full-color, accompany the text throughout.  Once again, she has created a charming, engaging book for young readers."
