United Way makes an impact through Calls to Action

Since launching its new Public Policy website in March, UWASC has sponsored a school readiness and a thank you call to action. A total of 385 actions have been taken on the website:

School Readiness: 17 emails, 4 tweets, and 1 phone call to legislators

Thank You: 363 emails to legislators

United Way advocates and volunteers have reached 54% of the SC Senate, 27% of the SC House, and the Governor through the two calls to action.

Early Childhood Common Agenda Assembly

UWASC is partnering with the Children's Trust and the Institute for Child Success to host the SC Early Childhood Common Agenda Assembly. The goal of this Assembly is to continue the work of the Early Childhood Common Agenda by developing policy recommendations that can be brought to the SC legislature when the new session begins in January. The Assembly will kick off on Monday, July 28th with a meeting in Columbia. Click here for details and to register for the meeting!

S. 516: Read to Succeed

S. 516 was amended as part of a bipartisan compromise during the legislative session to include 4K expansion. The South Carolina Child Early Reading Development and Education Program is a full day, four-year old kindergarten program for at-risk children, which will be expanded to eligible children residing in school districts with a poverty index of 70% or greater.

United Way leaders pen letter to General Assembly

In April, United Way leaders across South Carolina issued a joint letter to the entire General Assembly calling for the adoption of a statewide school readiness definition and assessment.
