My family loves football. It was no big surprise then on Monday to see my teenage son dragging out of bed late with a case of the morning after the Super Bowl blues. I was reflecting on a conversation between my two sons as they had discussed football defensive plays and strategies recently, and the difficulties of their teammates to remember all the details. My older son was saying that his secret to remembering the plays was to see the whole field, to think of the myriad of defensive plays not as 100 different defenses to remember, but more as parts of three strategies. The older one was instructing the younger that to play the game well one has to see the big picture. Seeing the whole field simply means to put the details into the context of the larger strategy.

I was thinking about his comments to "see the whole field" as we went into our United Way Strategy Sessions. These sessions are where each committee chair meets with the incoming United Way Leadership and discusses their plans for the upcoming year.

I find these sessions fascinating. It's really our chance to step back from the day-to-day and together to set the goals of what we desire for the organization, and through it, our community for the coming year.

January was a great month...a month of reflecting, planning, thanking our Leadership Givers, training new Board members, and expressing appreciation to our outgoing members. It was a great month for setting the ground work in anticipation of another great year of creating "A Better Life for All" in our community.

A special thanks to each donor, advocate and volunteer for the important role you play in "seeing the whole field" and helping us to make the lives better for a myriad of individuals in our community.

Thank you and Live United,

Danelle Glasscock
