February 2015

Recently one of my dear friends, Alisha Lagarde, launched a coaching business aimed at young professional women who are trying to launch their careers. I am so excited for Alisha and for her clients that I decided to devote a newsletter to Alisha and her new venture.

At the tender age of twenty-four, Alisha took the helm of the Austin Technology Council, where she was the visionary and chief architect for setting a new direction for the organization. For the first time, she reported to a high profile Board of Directors comprised of C-suite executives from some of Austin's most successful technology companies.  In contrast, most people don't report to a Board until they are much older and further along in their career...what a huge challenge and opportunity for a 24-year old!

Within a few years Alisha, with the support and help of her team and Board of Directors, had turned the organization around to become robust, profitable, and a thought leader in the technology community in Central Texas. Alisha is uniquely qualified to help young women learn to navigate the business world. She coaches her clients on everything from etiquette, appropriate business attire, their resumes, and how to communicate with executives.

Alisha, why did you found Launch Her Career?

I was inspired to found Launch after informally coaching and mentoring many young women to successfully launch their careers.  As someone who, in her early 20's, was fortunate to benefit from the advice and mentorship of experienced professionals, I am passionate about giving other young women the help that I was afforded early in my career.  My career success was due in large part to the coaching I received from business leaders in Austin. Through Launch, I am able to offer a "launching pad" for young women who strive to become successful business women.

What advice do you have for young women who are just graduating from college and starting their careers?

Cultivate mentors. Ask questions and really listen to their feedback. You will find that there are many managers, executives, or thought leaders who really want to help you succeed so let them help you!  And then later, you pay it forward by helping another young woman to achieve her dreams.

Do you recommend that young women get involved in community organizations?

Yes, absolutely! It is a great way to network, give back, and keep your life in perspective.

To what community organizations do you commit time and resources?

I have served on the board for the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, Girlstart, and as an adviser for The Austin Planetarium. I also served as a board member of the Austin Technology Council, the AusTech Chamber, the steering committee for the Austin Wireless Alliance and Long Center Corporate Council. As the mother of two young boys I don't have as much time to devote to the community as I once did but my husband and I are passionate supporters of Goodwill of Central Texas. We are also very excited about the Red Cross of Central Texas' upcoming gala, Luminaria on April 10, 2015!

How can a young woman contact you to find out more about your services?

My website Launchhercareer.com is the best way to reach me. I have lots of resources and helpful information and there is a form that you can fill out if you would like to get in contact.
