AWARENESS
JANUARY IS STALKING AWARENESS MONTH

STALKING IS DEFINED AS:

"...a 'willful course of conduct' involving repeated or continuing harassment of another individual that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed, or molested."     Michigan Penal Code MCLA750.411 h

In this definition, "willful course of conduct" refers to a pattern of behavior made up of a series of two or more separate noncontinuous acts which share the same purpose. The term harassed is defined as repeated or continuing unconsented contact directed toward a victim resulting in emotional distress.
Some things stalkers do
1. Repeatedly call you, including hang-ups.
2. Follow you and show up unexpectantly,
like at your work place or home.
3. Use technology like hidden cameras or
    GPS to track you.
4. Send mail or email to target or threaten
    you.
What you can do
1. Trust your instincts. Don't downplay
    danger.
2. Report to your local law enforcement
    agency.
3. Keep a detailed journal of all stalking
    activity.
4. Develop a safety plan that may include
    changing your routine and/or enlisting
    the help of a friend.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Prevention Month

Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings for the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation.  It is a lucrative trade, annually generating $32 billion a year worldwide. That is why it is one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world, exceeded only by the illegal arms industry and second only to the drug trade.

Victims of human trafficking come from all walks of life.  Anyone can be a victim-regardless of race, color, nation origin, disability, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, education level, or citizenship status.  Although there is no defining characteristic that all victims share, traffickers frequently prey on individuals who are poor, vulnerable, living in an unsafe situation, or are in search of a better life.
