California Governor Signs Bill Requiring Employers to Provide Paid Sick Leave


When does this law take effect?


The law takes effect as of July 1, 2015.

 


Who does the law apply to?

 

Most California employers regardless of size, including public employers, the state and municipalities and any employee (exception noted below) who work in California for 30 or more days within one year from the commencement of employment.


Is every employee eligible?


There are carve-outs for employees covered by collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with certain provisions, construction industry employees covered by a CBA, providers of in-home supportive services and certain individuals employed in the airline industry.

 


How will the sick pay be accrued?

 

Paid sick leave will be accrued at a rate of no less than one hour for every 30 hours worked.
