Once the claimant has exhausted their regular claim, the ability to draw on extended benefits may be available. The Federal extended unemployment benefits are 100% funded by the federal government.

Why do I have to pay UI to an ex-employee who has not worked for over a year?

Wages paid by employers within approximately last 19 months prior to a claim date may be used to compute a claim.

What is the Standard Base Period (SBP)?

It is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to the beginning date of the claim.

What is an Alternate Base Period (ABP)?

It is the last four completed calendar quarters prior to the beginning date of the claim.

ABPs allow more low-wage workers to qualify for benefits by updating the system for tracking an individual's recent earnings which are needed by many workers to satisfy the states' monetary eligibility rules.  Currently 12 states use ABP.

I have an employee who voluntarily left work.  Would I have to pay unemployment benefits?

Most states have "good cause" provisions that would allow for the employee to collect benefits. Some examples include; moving for a military spouse, severe illness, or personal danger.
