Roommates on the Move

When flatmates share their love for traveling, then the world is their oyster. For Nicole Velez (George Mason University), Katerina Sfakianakis (UMass Boston), Alli Shaffer (Bridgewater College) and Jennifer Scanlon (Salisbury University), the Semester in Cyprus was one more opportunity to continue what they love the most: exploring new countries!

You have spent a whole semester in Cyprus. What are your impressions from this semester?

Alli: So far, everything has been pretty surreal. The Cyprus experience was amazing, with the places, food, and people, and our semester at the University of Nicosia was great too since there was plenty of time to travel and to party!

Katerina: Studying abroad was the best decision I have ever made! Being in a foreign country teaches you to adapt to other cultures other than your own and you learn from this process.  Overall, my impression and my experience in Cyprus was amazing and, if I could come back, I personally would.

Jennifer: The University and its people have been amazing all the way of the semester! In the beginning, I was worried that the language barrier would be a huge struggle, but it wasn't at all.  My professors speak English as well as most people here. Also, everything is either on a walking distance or a short cab or bus ride away. Exploring the surrounding areas of Nicosia has been nice too, because each has a different atmosphere.

Nicole: My impression from this semester was the opportunity I was given to step out of my comfort zone, try things I wouldn't normally try and meet people I wouldn't normally meet.

You have spent time traveling during your semester in Cyprus. Where did you go?

Alli: As a large group, we returned to Ayia Napa for a night, which was a blast! Other than that, I have traveled to Crete to visit Katerina’s family, which was an incredible experience.

Katerina: Apart from traveling in Cyprus, which was a great experience to see the island, we did travel outside of Cyprus, too. My roommates and I traveled to Spain, Egypt, and Greece.

Jennifer: So far, I have only traveled together with Nicole, Katerina and Ali to Crete. It was an amazing experience!! Crete is exactly what I imagined about Greece. Katerina’s family lives in Crete so we had such a personal experience that it made everything that much better. Everyone there knows each other and it's truly an amazing place, I would love to go back and I wish we could have stayed longer.

Nicole: I went to Germany, Italy, London, Egypt, Poland, Austria and Greece

You have gotten to know each other through your study abroad experience. How was it travelling together? Would you do it again in the future?

Alli: Ι honestly consider most of the people I’ve met here as family. I know we will see each other after this semester, and hopefully travel together as well! Traveling together is so amazing because we get to experience these things with friends, making it even more special!

Katerina: Studying abroad and meeting new people is part of the experience. Me and my roommates may be different personalities, and yet we all have grown so close that our friendship will last beyond this semester. We are planning to get together back home to see each other. I was nervous at first about getting along, and living together, but now I love it! I would definitely do this all over again if I had the chance.

Jennifer: Traveling with these girls has been so amazing! We met on the Facebook page over summer and started messaging in a group chat. When we got here, it was like we had known each other forever. I would not change a thing about this group of girls. We are definitely a diverse mix of girls, but it worked out in the best way! Traveling together has only brought us closer and it definitely keeps things interesting! We have already planned to meet back up in the States and go for a trip to Puerto Rico this summer together! I know we will be friends even after this trip and it makes my heart so full.

Nicole: It was a lot of fun traveling together because we each have a unique personality and flavor to add to the group. We are planning a trip to visit my family in Puerto Rico this summer!

GS Students in Cyprus visit Troodos Mountain

Cyprus is not only famous for its beaches but also for its mountains!  Global Semesters students attending programs in Cyprus went on a day-trip  to Troodos Mountain, for an amazing outdoors adventure. The landscape was snowy and students took advantage every opportunity to play with the snow while they visited the lovely villages in the mountains. The end of the excursion included a surprise visit to a local winery, where students discovered the secrets of commandaria, the oldest continuously-produced and branded wine in the world!

Global Semesters Students in Cotswolds, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Oxford
This past weekend (3-4 December), University of Nicosia Global Semesters students in London travelled to Stratford-upon-Avon, Cotswolds and Oxford. In Stratford-upon-Avon, they visited Shakespeare’s birthplace, a wonderful house right in the heart of Stratford-Upon-Avon, where visitor helpers in Tudor outfits gave them information about Shakespeare and his father’s business (a glove workshop situated in the family’s house). Then, the next stop was the picture-perfect Cotswold villages for some quick photo opportunities and the day ended with a visit to Oxford for a walk on one of the most famous university campuses in the world and a visit to Christ’s Church where scenes of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School were filmed. It was a wonderful day full of English tradition and contemporary cultures and the students had a blast!
