    A Big Thanks!

    Philly Nationals 2012

A special thanks to all of you who participated in this year's summer NABC. We received nothing by praise from the many visitors who enjoyed our city as a host site. The success was due to the enthusiastic and generous support of our many volunteers, and the friendly attitude of the all of the local players who supported the tournament.

Unit 141 Members Finish High in Top National Events

The competition at any National tournament is fierce, and this summer's NABC was no different. That didn't stop many Unit 141 members from earning high finishes in top events.

The list below highlights the dozens of Unit 141 players earned over 30 masterpoints during the 10 days of competition. You can see that nine managed to earn over 75 masterpoints in that short time. Check back at the District 4 website for a complete list. Congratulations to everyone who garnered gold!

Table Tips: Fill Out a Card

convention card A pair of players participated in the Roth Swiss last weekend at the Philly Nationals, an NABC+ event that draws most of the world's best players, without a convention card. They stated that it was their first time playing together and they didn't have time to fill out a card. Not to worry, they just played 2/1, gadgets, and upside down carding. Hold the phone! Can you identify what is wrong with this picture?

The rules of bridge require that a pair of players have two identical cards completed and available at the table. If not, they incur a penalty and must play SAYC and standard carding. Does that rule seem Draconian or unnecessary? Perhaps, but the rule exists to insure that the game remain open and fair to all. As bidding systems become more and more complicated, it seems even more important that players make their systems known.

In short, fill out a card with each of your partners. You can store and easily revise multiple cards on bridgewinners.com or hand-write one with the rudiments of your system even at the last minute if you need to. If you encounter a pair that lacks a card, whether it's a local game or the most competitive NABC+ event, we suggest you call the director and let him or her sort it out for your protection and the fairness of the game for all.
