With fall on the horizon the need for school supplies has developed throughout the valley. This year, the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley was awarded a $3,500 grant by Staples Foundation, the private charitable arm of Staples, Inc. to purchase school supplies and backpacks for area youth through local United Way NSV partner agencies. Through the grant, United Way was able to distribute over 350 backpacks and assorted school supplies to agencies in the Shenandoah Valley.
Through the Staples grant, the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley has already begun impacting the community;
"This is really going to help us" said Kim Herbstritt, Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers.
"Even if we supply scholarships for our classes, our students are still concerned about how they'll get their supplies... these composition books all match, it's going to make them feel like they all belong here... our students are going to feel so blessed!" said Stormy Thrasher, Program and Volunteer Director of Literacy Volunteers.
Other agencies that requested and received supplies purchased by the grant include Big Brother's Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club of Northern Shenandoah Valley, Heritage Child Development Center, Highland Food Pantry, Literacy Volunteers, Restore Hope House Ministry, the Salvation Army Winchester, and Tri-County VA OIC Inc. - Apple Country Head Start who received 164 children's backpacks.
United Way was also recognized in a Winchester Star story on Saturday, August 15th, 2015.
