Family Talking Points
Final exams will wrap up next week and with that your college student will most likely return home and be living under your roof once again. Your student has experienced the freedom and independence that is necessary for their growth during college and will bring those expectations home.

Use this as an opportunity to negotiate and create an agreement with your student that reflects your needs and expectations as a parent, but also your student's wants for continued independence and freedom. Empower them by including them in this conversation so they feel respected in your home. Here are some topics to consider discussing:

  • Curfews and communication on when they will return home at night
  • Projects and chores around the house
  • Summer vacations or family obligations
  • Behavioral habits they may carry over from their college lifestyle

Including them in the conversation not only shows that you respect their needs as an emerging adult, but it helps build a strong foundation for a less stressful and more enjoyable summer.
