Jean Harlow Centenary

Saturday, March 6
Beginning at 2:00 pm

The Egyptian Theatre
6712 Hollywood Boulevard
Hollywood, CA 90028

This is a co-presentation with the American Cinematheque.

At 2:00 p.m., Darrell Rooney, co-author of the new book Harlow in Hollywood, delivers a slideshow on Jean Harlow’s life and career, the first blonde sex symbol. Rooney and co-author Mark A. Vieira will sign Harlow in Hollywood at 3:00 PM in the lobby. The one hour lecture will be followed by a screening of the film, Bombshell, at 3:30 PM.

BOMBSHELL, 1933, Warner Bros., 96 min. Victor Fleming's positively breakneck-pace satire of Hollywood. Jean Harlow is at her peak as harried Lola Burns, a movie matinee idol being driven crazy by relentless press agent Lee Tracy (who also has the hots for her). The movie she's shooting with director heartthrob Pat O'Brien is modeled after RED DUST. Naughty double entendres fly fast and furious in this razor-sharp and unabashedly shameless screwball comedy produced by M-G-M.

Tickets are $7 for members of ADSLA and American Cinematheque. Regular American Cinematheque prices apply for the general public ($11) and students/seniors ($9) and are available via Fandango, or can be purchased on the day of the event at the door. Please bring your ADSLA membership card with you to the box office.

Parking: $2 per hour metered parking available near the theatre. $2 for four hours validated parking available at Hollywood and Highland. There are also pay parking lots on Las Palmas and Cherokee that cost approximately $10. Why not take the metro? The Egyptian is a very short walk east from the Hollywood and Highland METRO station.

Miracle Mile Tour

Saturday, March 26th
10:00 am to noon

Join the ADSLA when we take a step back in time - - literally - - on our signature walking tour of L.A.'s iconic Miracle Mile! Born in the 1920s, this brainchild of A.W. Ross was conceived as a street to rival the great boulevards of Europe - - elegant and spacious, populated by stylish shops- - and the chicest people! (And this being Los Angeles, plenty of available parking!) A.W. Ross's dream has developed into one of the countrys most famous urban enclaves - - featuring a treasure trove of Art Deco architecture.

This sidewalk safari is led by J. Eric Lynxwiler, urban archeologist and celebrated co-author and researcher for the book Wilshire Boulevard: Grand Concourse of Los Angeles. If you've never taken a tour with Eric, you're in for a treat - - and if you have, you know that his encyclopedic knowledge of L.A. and its environs is rivaled only by his wit and humor.

The tour begins at the Stiles Clements-designed, black and gold terra cotta bank building at 5209 Wilshire - - come join the ADSLA and explore neighborhood block by block to see what the area was, what it is and what it will be!

Comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen and water suggested. 2-hour metered parking available in the area. Please read signs carefully.
