OCTOBER 2016

PRESIDENT'S PEN
This year's Night at the Museum event is almost here! Get your tickets now for what promises to be one of the most exciting events yet. Themed as  College Game Night at the Museum the event features music by the Beu Sisters, a live and silent auction with many sought after items, along with lots of great food and fun.  An added feature will be a competition to show team spirit and support for your favorite college football team.  The competition is underway now to see whose team colors will be worn by the Museum mannequin for the remainder of 2016 and the winning team will be announced at the event. Contact the Museum now @ 386.478.0052 to learn how to pledge support for you team. Tickets are on sale now at the museum, the event is scheduled for Friday October 14th beginning at 6pm.

Because of your continued support , we have been able to make some nice additions to your Museum facility this year.  The finishing touches are being placed on our new audio visual presentation system which is housed in the rear of the museum.  Complete with a pull down screen, mounted projection system that can be connected to a laptop and an amplified speaker system with microphone. This system promises to be a great compliment to the Museum facility.  Museum members and supporters donated $2000 which was matched by the Southeast Volusia Historical Society to make the completion of this project possible.

Additionally, we initiated a drive last month for donations to purchase new event tables for the Museum facility.  In past years' volunteers generously donated their time and transportation and these tables were rented from an offsite facility when needed.  Our new tables will help minimize the impact on our volunteers and pocketbook while easing the coordination it takes to host events in the Museum.  To date we are only $235 shy of our goal. Thank you for all your continued support, I look forward to seeing you for a great time at College Game Night at the Museum.

FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUMS
HONORS PAST PRESIDENT, JOHN PEEL
During the September annual meeting of the Florida Association of Museums our very own Past Historical Society President John Peel was awarded their prestigious Outstanding Trustee Award. As I began the nomination process with Irene Beckham several months ago it became readily apparent that John would be most deserving of this award and we are proud that FAM agreed with us.

John began his time with the museum as a volunteer in 2010. His experience with over 50 non-profit agencies and boards led to his quickly taking a leadership role at the Historical Society. He was appointed to complete an unfinished term as Board president and he took it from there. After researching what needed to be done, and then prioritizing goals, John was able to bring committees together, thus assuring that members had a role and input as he moved the Society forward.

Just a few of John's many accomplishments include: restarting the quarterly printed newsletter and then leading the transition to a monthly electronic newsletter that you now read. This change has led to our being able to get you more information, in a timelier manner, at a cheaper price to the society. John reinvigorated the annual membership renewal process and helped membership revenue more than triple. John has been driver in the creation of our largest annual fundraiser, Night at the Museum. This event has continually been a fun one for the community as well as raising valuable funds for our operations. John has also helped bring the museum up to date on technology which has helped back office duties function more smoothly.

John has held many roles in the Historical Society including Treasurer, President, and served for several years on our Endowment Trust committee. While no longer officially on the Board of Directors, John continues to lend his support whenever asked and serves as a readily available resource. But most of all we are proud to call him a friend.

Congratulations John! You deserved this award.

Community Museum Meeting
Thursday, November 17, 2016 6:30pm
Join author Dr. Ann Browning Masters as she reads from and discusses her book Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers: Poetry of St. Augustine.

Learn about mullet-netting, datil pepper-growing, pilau-eating, rum-running times in Saint Augustine and Northeast Florida from after the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement.  Bold, humorous, sometimes heart-tugging, this is the tale of deep EspaƱa's convergence and melding with the Deep South.  Discover a story of Old Florida, published by the Florida Historical Society Press in 2015.

Ann Browning Masters is a 12th generation Floridian.  She is a Floridana, a descendant of the Spanish settlers who came to Florida during the First Spanish Period, and a Menorcan, a descendant of the Mediterranean's who settled in St. Augustine during Florida's British Period.  In 2015, Dr. Masters was knighted by the St. Augustine Easter Festival for her dedication in promoting St. Augustine's Spanish heritage.

She first shared oral traditions from Floridanos, Menorcans, and the "Crackers" who entered Florida during Territorial days at the 1996 Florida Folk Festival. In addition to sharing stories of common people who became part of the cultural roots of St. Augustine, she was interviewed and recorded for the Florida State Historical Archives. A retired faculty member of St. Johns River State College, she continues to read from her writings on Floridanos and Menorcans in the Eckerd College Road Scholar program.

The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.
COCKTAIL TABLE FUNDRAISER
Amount left to raise: $235.00
During museum events we often have need for cocktail tables. These round tables, which are nearly four feet in height, allow groups of visitors to congregate and have a place to set their food or drinks without the worry about damaging museum displays. These tables can also be adjusted to a lower height and used for small group discussions or during presentations. In the past the museum has rented these tables. This expense, coupled with the time needed to pick up and return the tables, can be eliminated by purchasing our own tables.

The Night at the Museum committee has chosen a table and nylon covers that look professional and will serve the museum well for many years to come. We would like to ask our members and newsletter readers to help us raise the remaining $235.00 needed to fund this purchase. Donations may be made by cash, check, or card. We can also accept payment through PayPal. Our PayPal user ID is artyfaques at bellsouth.net. If you donate through PayPal please make a note that it is for the table fund. The Southeast Volusia Historical Society is a 501 (c)(3) not for profit corporation and your donation may be tax deductible. We thank you for your continued support and helping us make this the best museum we possibly can.
Mysteries at the Museum
This unusual item was recently found during archaeological monitoring that was carried out on Chestnut Street where a new assisted living facility is being constructed. This construction can easily be seen from the Highway 44/Lytle Avenue approach to beachside. Based upon where the piece was found it is assumed to be railroad related. The questions are though; what exactly is it and what is its age? If you think you know please drop us an email. We'd love to know more about this.

"Do you have a local mystery you would like help with? Submit your photo or question to the museum at [email protected]. "

A Certificate of Appropriateness was approved last week by the New Smyrna Beach Historic Preservation Commission for the construction of a four-story Assisted Living Facility on the location of the former Alba Court Inn. One condition of approval is that archaeological testing be conducted on the property prior to/during construction work for this large facility. Approval by the NSB City Commission is expected for this project. The parcel of land involved is located at the NW corner of Washington St. and Hillman St. and is within the high potential area of town for possible clues to the prehistoric occupations that were once here, to the British 18th century Smyrnea Settlement plantation, the occupation of Ambrose Hull in the early 19th century during the 2nd Spanish Period and for later occupations following these. Expectations are that the archaeologists working with the museum will be involved in this upcoming effort.
