Anchorage LIO Open House
As many of you know, last year, the Anchorage Legislative Information Office (LIO) moved from downtown to midtown. In an effort to connect you with Anchorage elected officials during the Legislative session, as well as introduce everyone to the new building (myself included), we will be holding an open house!
|
|
- WHAT: A chance to talk with all Anchorage Legislators at the new LIO
- WHEN: Saturday, February 25th, 10:00am - 12:00pm
- WHERE: 1500 W. Benson Blvd, 2nd Floor
This is an excellent opportunity to have some face to face time with your elected officials and to make your voice heard.
|
|
Prefer to meet closer to home? After the Open House, I will be hosting a town hall gathering on Saturday, Feb. 25th at Kincaid Elementary from 1:00 - 3:00pm.
I will be joined by:
-
Mayor Ethan Berkowitz
-
Revenue Commissioner Randall Hoffbeck
-
Assemblyman Eric Croft
-
Assemblyman Tim Steele
-
APD Lieutenant Josh Nolder
Get a chance to touch base with local officials, discuss public safety in our area and get a better understanding of State budget concerns.

Plus, get the unique opportunity to play the "Balancing Alaska's Budget" game! It'll be your chance to explore ways to solve the budget crisis on your own terms.
Bring your questions and ideas, and we’ll provide the snacks and refreshments. Hope to see you there!

House Bill 80 - Reducing Energy Costs
Last week, the House passed House Bill 80, an effort to reduce energy costs for commercial property owners. I was proud to vote yes and speak in support of it. Here's what I had to say on the House Floor:
|
|
This bill is an important step forward on the path to a more sustainable and energy efficient future for Alaska. It will introduce a process to allow for municipalities and boroughs to have a financing option to cover loans for alternative energy or energy efficient improvements for commercial properties.
It is a completely voluntary initiative that won't cost the state any money to implement. I look forward to tracking this bill's progress as it makes its way through the Senate.

|
We’ve been dealing with some heavy stuff in Finance recently—looking at different plans to solve the fiscal crisis in a sustainable way.
In addition to our budget work, we also recently heard House Bill 23, a bill I’m proud to co-sponsor. HB 23 provides healthcare for families of police officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty. Various municipalities have provided this protection ad-hoc, but it is not guaranteed in current law.
This is a great common-sense idea that has support from almost everyone I’ve talked with. What’s interesting is how difficult it is to nail down details—I encourage people to check out the committee hearings, because it shows how much work goes into doing something right, even when we all agree on the goal.

That's my update for this week. Expect to hear more as things start to heat up down here in Juneau!
