Workshop: Water Conservation: Building Ollas
Saturdays, October 6th and 20th, 9AM in the garden
Ollas
Want to learn about a centuries old water conservation practice?  Join us in the garden this October and participate in a hands-on project that will make watering your plants much easier.  Learn how to build and utilize an Olla.

What is an Olla?  Using ollas as a water conservation method has been around since at least the first century B.C. but was introduced to the Americas by Spanish settlers in colonial times.  An olla is an unglazed pottery jar that can be used to irrigate plants.  The olla is buried in the garden next to the roots of plants, with only a small portion of the olla extending above the surface.  It is then filled with water, which seeps into the soil through the walls to water the roots of the plants.  This method is extremely efficient since no water is lost to evaporation or run-off.
