Thursday 12 October, 5pm
Seminar 2 -- "MIDWAY: THE TIDE TURNS"
The second in the 8 part seminar series facilitated by our own CDR Rob Rivers, USN (Ret), Class of 1973 is this Thursday (12 October) at the Naval Armory. This lecture series focuses on World War II in the Pacific. 

A pizza dinner will be served concurrently with the lectures. Alumni are welcome and there is no charge to attend the seminars; registration is required to make sure space is available. Contributions to the pizza fund are greatly appreciated

CONSIDER A DONATION TO HELP OFFSET FOOD COSTS FOR THE SEMINAR

Donations to the Naval Science Department are being accepted to offset the cost of pizza being served at the lecture (held during the UNC food service dinner hours). A contribution of any level is appreciated and a $200.00 contribution will sponsor the whole seminar. Select "Naval Sciences (NROTC)" as the fund at this  link .

This is a great opportunity to interact with the future leaders of the Naval Services! Please join us.
IThis is a great opportunity to participate in Midshipmen Professional Development as they get to ask the Panel of Alumni various leadership related questions. The event is followed by a mixer/dinner where the midshipmen have an opportunity to delve deeper. The third of three UNC NROTC Alumni Association Scholarships will also be presented on this occasion.

Army ROTC is the lead activity this year with participation from the NROTC Midshipman Battalion and Air Force ROTC Cadets.

2017 ANNUAL MEETING & REUNION RECAP
A GREAT WEEKEND KICKOFF!
The weekend began with an Alumni Social at the DoubleTree. Wine provided by Howard (Class of 1972) and Carol Petrea was enjoyed as the General Alumni Association catered light food and drinks. Old Friends were re-acquainted and some continued catching up past 0100.
Saturday began with a Board Of Directors meeting.
The Annual Meeting was held on the drill deck. The Unit Commanding Officer, the Midshipmen Battalion Commander, The Battalion XO, and the Battalion Ops Officer got us up to speed on what the UNC Battalion is doing
The Annual Meeting included reports form officers and committee chairs on the condition of the Association and ongoing activities. 40+ alumni and family participated - the largest such Annual Meeting in recent memory.

DISTINQUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD 2017
The UNC NROTC Alumni Association's 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to the Honorable S. Jay Plager, Class of 1952. Judge Plager is Circuit Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He was appointed to the court by President George H. W. Bush in 1989. He has served on the Association`s Board of Directors since 2014.
The Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award is a graduate of the UNC NROTC program who has distinguished himself or herself in contributions to our Nation, the armed services, industry or business, the arts, philanthropy, or other social contributions. This is not a "distinguished member of the military" award, and the individuals need not have been career members of the armed forces.
2016 and 2017 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS
The Distinguished Service Award is a graduate (or former staff member), usually a Member of the Association who has distinguished himself or herself in contributions to the UNC NROTC Alumni Association. 
YNCM Donald Ledford, USN (retired) was the recipient of the 2016 Award and was present to receive his award at the 2017 Annual Meeting. Master Chief Ledford served as the Unit`s Admin Officer and Senior Enlisted Leader from 1981-1985, After retirement from the U. S. Navy he served as the University`s Department of Naval Science Administrator from 1986 through his civilian retirement in 2004. He helped found the UNC NROTC Alumni Association in 1990 and served as the Association's Registered Agent when the Association was incorporated in 1998 through 2016. He also served as an elected member of the Board of Directors from 1998-2001
The 2017 recipient of the Distinquished Service Award was Leo H. "Rusty" Phelan, '59. Rusty is a past Director (2006-2012) and past Secretary (2007-2012) of the UNC NROTC Alumni Association and has also served several tours as Reunion Chair.
MIDSHIPMEN SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The Captain Alfred M. Koster $1000 scholarship was awarded to Midshipman 3/C William Verwoerdt . Midshipman Verwoerdt is Originally from Winston-Salem and is interested in becoming an aviator.

The Master Chief Donald Ledford $1000 scholarship was awarded to Midshipman 3/C Matthew Guerrera of Silver Spring, Maryland . Midshipman Guerrera was inspired to join the NROTC program by his mentors in the fire department who were Marine Corps Officers. Master Chief Ledford presented Midshipman Guerrera's Check.

The NROTC Alumni Association $1000 scholarship was awarded to Midshipman 3/C Antolini (not pictured) . Midshipman Antolini is originally from Huntersville, North Carolina. He too desires to be an aviator, but he is also an avid Lake Jordan Sailor. Midshipman Antolini was not able to be present this past weekend; however, he will be presented his Scholarship at the upcoming Alumni Panel event on 26 October.
