 A Reflection on the "Made in" Programs
A Few Cool Hardware Stores Owner Gina Schaefer Explains What The Fuss Is About With Our Made in DC and New Made in MD Initiatives
To All Our Raving Fans,
When you spend as much time as I do in a hardware store, there are moments when we forget to explain to our customers all the ways we try to create a partnership with them, and why we are starting a really cool new initiative like our new "Made in" programs.
For example, some of you may not know that we actually sell 1000's of products that are made in the USA. It occurred to me that because Independance Day is upon us, it is especially important to reflect on where our products come from and maybe do something to encourage an inflow of locally made products. It takes a lot of products to fill one of our stores - we carry more than 25,000 different items! And while we appreciate all of them, we do have a special affinity for our vendors who manufacture in the United States.
Marc and I value "local" so much, that we launched our Made in DC program earlier in the year to take the Made in the USA movement to a whole other level - to items actually made right in Washington, DC. Two members of our team spent countless hours crafting the program, advertising it, vetting the applications, and then promoting our first Made in DC vendor. Thank you Robbie and Courtney!
This month we are really excited to step it up a notch by also launching our Made in Maryland Program. Why shouldn't our Takoma Park and Baltimore stores get to have some fun too?
If you're business that could use either of these programs, steal away! If you are a "maker" of goods, visit our website for an application and help us spread the word. "Local" is alive and well in Washington and Maryland and we promise to do our part to keep it going.

in Maryland
There's still time to apply to be our first vendor!
We are happy to announce the newest partnership opportunity for local entrepreneurs in the Baltimore and Takoma Park area: Made in Maryland! Similar to our recently launched Made in DC program (a Think Local First DC and AFCHS initiative), Made in MD provides our entrepreneural neighbors an opportunity to sell their products in our stores. Applicants must reside in Maryland, and their products should "fit" into at least one of our departments. Applications due by July 5th, 2013 to [email protected].

 It's the last week to apply for Made in DC!
As a reminder, our Made in DC program spotlights products made in the communities where our stores are located. To do so, we are dedicating one end cap (approximate space is 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall) to a local entrepreneur and are soliciting RFP's to choose our next round of new vendors.
To apply, please download the Made in DC application here and send us the following information by 5pm on Friday, July 5, 2013:
1. Your name and contact information
2. Proof of residency
3. Your product information (photos, URL , description, etc). Basically anything you want to show and tell us about how great your product is
4. What you hope to accomplish by selling in one of our stores
5. Confirm you have enough product to make the space look great (about enough product to fill 3-4 shelves in a 4-ft section-- might vary based on size of products)
6. Email [email protected]

 Mrs. Meyers Grassroots Tour Coming to Old Takoma Ace and Waverly Ace!
For all you diehard fans of Mrs. Meyers cleaning products, we've got a special event for you this weekend: the Mrs. Meyer's Garden-Fresh Tour is coming to two of our stores!
Join us Thursday, July 4th at Old Takoma Ace in Takoma Park, MD and Saturday, July 7th at Waverly Ace Hardware in Baltimore, MD for a very special in store event with Mrs. Meyers! Sample some of their awesome all natural products and chat with their rep who can answer all your questions on their sweet smelling soaps. Then, shop in stores for our complete line of Mrs. Meyers products, including laundry care, hand soaps, dish soaps and detergents, candles, countertop sprays, all-purpose cleaner, and more!
Both events will take place in stores from approximately 11am-3pm- just look for the van!

Help Raise Money for Children's Miracle Network with our Icon Campaign!
Our All-Star Ellie was diagnosed with Spina Bifida in utero, but that doesn't slow her down! Help children like her through our Icon Campaign during the month of July.
Ace has partnered with Children's Miracle Network to launch their Icon Campaign, an in-store fundraising initiative to raise money for children with illnesses and birth defects. The campaign runs through July 31st and is as easy as donating $1 or more when you checkout at the register. Ask your cashier for details, if they don't as you first!
In addition to our Icon Campaign and our blood drive on July 20th (see below for details), we are giving our customers additional incentive to give to our CMN campaign with our two day CMN bucket sale! Visit our stores Saturday July 20th to Sunday July 21st and receive 20% off your purchase when you make a $5 donation to CMN. Plus, your donation comes with a limited edition CMN Blue Bucket!

 Donations are More than Monetary-- CMN Bloodmobile Blood Drive Saturday July 20th at OTA!
There are so many ways to give, but only one way to donate life (and you can do it on your lunch break!). Blood bank supplies are running at an all time low, and the children at our Network Hospitals in DC are in dire need for blood and platelet donations. Please join us at Old Takoma Ace on Saturday, July 20th from 10am-3pm for our Blood Drive event to benefit Children's National Medical Centers, our local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. All donations will be taken on the CMN Bloodmobile, which will be parked in the back parking lot of Old Takoma Ace Hardware on 7001 Carroll Ave. Why should you donate? Read more here!
Each person who donates will receive a discount coupon on services and retail products to RED DOOR SPAS by Elizabeth Arden, as well as a complementary insulated tote picnic bag from Children's Miracle Network!
We need at least 25 donors to make this event a success for the hospital, and there is no limit to how many people can donate. Takoma Park's Newest Coffee Spot 'La Mano Coffee Bar' Needs

Our friends at La Mano Coffee Bar need our help raising money to open their shop in Takoma Park, MD!
Our relationship with La Mano first began last May, when we invited their staff to attend our Old Takoma Ace Garden Party. Unfortunately, they were too busy with their own opening that they were not able to attend, but instead graciously offered us raffle prizes for the party! Now, it's our turn to return the arms welcome support they have shown us and help bring a custom coffee shop to the Takoma Park neighborhood!
Opening near the historic Main Street location has so many benefits but is not exempt from the the wear that come with years of use-- and La Mano needs our help! La Mano Coffee Bar is a coffee bar and bakeshop located in the Takoma neighborhood of Washington, D.C., directly across from the Takoma Red Line Metro Station and a few blocks from Historic Main Street of Takoma Park, Maryland.
The shop will feature manually prepared espresso drinks and a selection of hand-poured coffees sourced from craft roastery Ceremony Coffee of Annapolis, MD.
