Monthly Musings

November is a time to give thanks and appreciation to everything that brings positive light to our lives. Whether it's family, friendships, good health, new opportunities, or anything else that we are grateful to have around us each and everyday. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, there is much to prepare for and look forward to. It's a time to surround yourself and connect with loved ones to celebrate our thanks over food and good company. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

"Gifting" Thanks at Thanksgiving

As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to share  some wisdom from DR. J.T. Garrett, a professional and spiritual leader who I interviewed In 2005 when I lived in Morehead City, North Carolina.  Dr. J.T. Garrett, Ed.D is the author of several books on Native Americans and the Cherokee and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He is also the retired  Health Director for Carteret County, North Carolina.
I asked Dr. Garrett for his perspective on Thanksgiving. He said, "From my perspective as a Cherokee Indian, this is the time of year to focus to be on giving thanks as we "gift" others with the sharing of food.  Greencorn Ceremony was a common American Indian way of "coming together" as a people and having a "Thanksgifting" as we gathered the new corn and beans and dried roots for winter survival.   However, I remind myself each day in a "prayer-chant" that thankful to be a Member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from Western North Carolina and as to be the Health Director for Carteret County in Eastern North Carolina.  "I do a "tobacco prayer" where I spread just a pinch of North Carolina (or what we call Indian Tobacco) tobacco to Mother Earth for her gifts each morning.  It just seems fitting, especially as a so called tobacco state.  Of course, I always thank the Great One by holding the tobacco or as traditionally used cornmeal upward in the right hand, then share it with Mother Earth.  Try it sometime.  There is a wonderful feeling of calm, healing, and release while giving thanks to the Great One and to Mother Earth."
I asked about how he feels we can give thanks for our gifts at Thanksgiving. Dr. Garrett said, "Each year at Thanksgiving or "Thanksgifting" it is a time to share food to those families who have so little.  It is a time for me to remember that part of my family ancestry is also from Ireland, England, and France.  I can only imagine the struggles experienced in building their first farms here in NC.  This is a time for me to remind myself how lucky I am to be blessed with mixed ancestry, as well as to be the health director in Carteret County.  I am constantly reminded in just looking around our beautiful county of this area being such a critical part of the history and the beginnings of the new America.  I always thank my mother my Cherokee ancestry.  I thank my grandfathers and the elders of my tribe for the sharing and learning the culture, language, and traditions."
I asked what he has learned from the blending of the Native American and American traditions. Dr. Garrett said, "The blending of cultures taught me to be sensitive to all the gifts of life and to respect the differences in people and cultures.  It is always my blessing to bring this sensitivity, tradition, and heritage to my work as the health director.  We might be one county, but we are many communities with wonderful cultures and history of people that also include American Indian ancestry.  To me, each culture of people in our county bring such diverse learning opportunity to make our young people better in every way as values to be respectful of others cultures."
Dr. Garrett said that he asks his staff to not forget why we are here as helpers and servants to the public we serve. Dr. Garrett said,   " I ask them to be thankful for what we have and to share with others as they did in the First Thanksgiving as people of all cultures came together for blessing the food and giving thanks."
