Pornography consumption, sexual experiences, lifestyle & self-rated health in male adolescents.

A population-based classroom survey of 16 year old boys (477) from 53 randomly selected Swedish High Schools indicates that; 96% of 16 year old boys watch pornography - 10% "frequently" (every day), 63% are "average users" and 27% are "non-frequent users".

"Frequent" pornography users often spend more than 10 hours straight several times a week at the computer, have more sexual experiences, more relationship problems with peers, truancy, obesity and use oral tobacco/alcohol more often than "average" and "non-frequent users". Self-rated health appears similar in all three groups.

Treatment of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA).

The predominant approaches to the treatment of CMPA are:

1.   "Avoidance" or "utilization of a diet with an extensive hydrolyzate."

2.   The gradual introduction of increasingly small amounts of cows milk into the diet.

A study undertaken on infants (less than 12 months of age) who are clinically allergic (with laboratory confirmation) to cows milk protein , given either a whey (eWH) or casine (eCH) hydrolysate for one month ( and efficacy assessed with a symptom-based score ), indicates that both hydrolysates are equally effected in alleviating symptoms.

Vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR) with expansion thoracoplasty for congenital spinal deformity.

Traditional surgery for multiple congenital vertebral anomalies in babies includes fusion in situ and hemiepiphyseodesis, which does not promote spinal growth or address a thoracic insufficiency syndrome.

A report of 24 children with non-syndromic multiple congenital vertebral anomalies, treated with vertebral expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR), with expansion thoracoplasty and followed for 40 months indicates that VEPTR improves the angle of spinal deformity and thoracic height. "Challenges include the need for multiple procedures, skin problems and device migration".

Topical Tranexamic acid to treat epistaxis (vs nasal packing).

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine and is used as an antifibrinolytic agent to treat or prevent excessive bleeding.

An Emergency Department study using topical application of the injectable form of Tranexamic acid compared the time to arrest a nasal bleed, hours needed to stay in hospital, re-bleeding during 24 hours or 1 week later, and patient satisfaction, to anterior nasal packing with pledgets coated with tetracycline ointment.

71% of tranexamic treated epistaxis patients stopped bleeding within 10 minutes, 95% are discharged within 2 hours, and re-bleeding occurs in 4.7% during the first 24 hours as compared to 31.2 %, 6.4% and 11% respectively for the anterior nasal packed group. Tranexamic acid treatment for epistaxis is superior to nasal packing.

Ibuprofen vs Acetaminophen vs their combination for musculoskeletal pain.

A randomized, double-blind, control trial evaluated the benefits of treatment utilizing ibuprofen, acetaminophen or a combination of both for a group of 90 matched adult patients seen in an Emergency Department for musculoskeletal pain. Pain scores / opioid need were measured at 20, 40 and 60 minutes .

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen or a combination of both appear to provide equal pain relief and the combination of the two drugs does not appear to reduce the subsequent need for opioids.

"Maternal speech/singing "-effects on the preterm infant.

A study utilizing 18 mothers who either talked or sang to their medically stable preterm infant in a neonatal intensive care unit, indicates that infant exposure to a mothers' voice results in improved arterial oxygen saturations, heart rates, & significantly fewer negative critical events (hypoxemia, bradycardia, and apnea). Mothers are good for even small babies! Ed.
