Fire Damage

Here are a Few Updates.....
First of all we are doing well. Thank you for your calls, emails, cards and Facebook messages. Much of this spring and summer has been heart breaking and frustrating. The first two months after the fire we moved from one vacation rental home to another (we don't own these homes but Jan and her sister each manage a couple.) and sometimes to Jan's sister's B&B. Thank you to our wonderful friends for allowing us to take over their homes. Moving every week to ten days had us dreading each "moving day." Despite packing our belongings in clear plastic boxes, we still were searching for items and having difficulty finding things. Funny, yelling at each other didn't help in the least. We now have our permanent temporary living quarters. Jan found a 30 ft. camper on Craig's List. Scroll down for more about our living arrangements, progress and plans for the new Blue Heron Inn.

Our House
Our House....
Is a thirty foot 2000 Keystone Sprinter. We cannot thank George and Patty Parker enough for managing to get the darn thing around trees, bumps.....(just how close can you get to that palm tree) and to just the right spot for us. Also a big thanks to Chip Cox for bringing in the chain saw. Click on the picture of Bill for a video of the event. For those of you familiar with the song "Our House" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.....we do have 'two cats in the yard..... and flowers on the table.'

Charred Remains
Extensive Damage
As you can see, damage to the house is extensive. We cannot thank Josh and Frank from Green Leaf Construction and Restoration enough for their help and expertise. They are experts at assessing damage and repair and replacement costs after a fire or other disaster and communicating that loss to the insurance company. Josh and Frank went over every inch of the house in their assessment. Thanks to Green Leaf's detailed report and communication with the insurance company regarding our loss all went much better than expected. Josh and Frank are also contractors but given our location we opted to go with a local contractor and utilize local workers.
Plans, Building and Going Forward

At this time serious demolition of the house is happening. A crew came in to tear everything down to the studs and now another crew is working to tear down the rest of the damaged area. Just to give you an idea we had three rooms left with walls and roof intact. Two rooms on the second floor and the one room on the third floor. The new house will be elevated per FEMA code so what was the main floor is no longer living space.
Dick Lang, a friend and neighbor from Tolomato Island, has offered his architect and design services free of charge. Dick is helping us to design a new inn while utilizing what we have to work with. The design will be Mediterranean in nature with an emphasis on Eco friendly and energy efficiency. At this time we plan six guest bedrooms with ensuite baths in addition to the innkeepers quarters. Under the house will be some parking but also a gathering area around the original fireplace. This will become a gas fireplace as the chimney suffered to much damage for repair. Where the kitchen was will become an area for small events with an outdoor kitchen and patio.
After the current demolition phase, engineers will evaluate the footings under the house and make decisions regarding additional support for the elevated floor plan.
