WI Youth Water Stories Summit
Held August 2nd – 4th, 2017, DOTS partners from Escuela Verde, Urban Ecology Center, La Crosse, Northland College, and Bayfield, came together at Upham Woods to share the stories of the water in their areas.
Youth collected data while on-site, exploring transects of the Wisconsin and Lemonweir Rivers while canoeing, investigating a riparian ecosystem while hiking Black Hawk Island, and during an all Summit Data Blitz at 8 different Upham Woods locations.
In addition to the data collection, students got a chance to interact with their fellow young scientists from around Wisconsin. On the final day of the Summit, students all presented their water stories in front of the large group. These stories included water quality issues where they’re from and around the U.S. as well as their findings while at Upham Woods.
There were seven presentations and water quality issues explored included lead, E.coli, litter, rising water levels, and human intervention of natural waterways.
Many groups included next steps that were further data collection and conservation once they returned home.

Open Enrollment Island Explorer Camp
This year’s August Open Enrollment Camp theme was Island Explorers, inviting 4-H and non-4-H campers from all over the state to spend time outdoors with us. The campers spent lots of time exploring Upham Woods’ 200 acre Blackhawk Island, crawling through caves and learning about the island history. Of course, there was also plenty of time for playing water games and swimming, team building on Peanut Butter Mountain low ropes course, canoeing, hiking, learning about the fur-trading Voyageurs, and so much more.
The campers had a great time playing while learning about nature and the outdoors. Watch our calendar for more Open Enrollment Camp opportunities in Summer 2018!

Fall 2017 & Spring 2018 Dates Still Available!
Did you know that November is a great time to be at Upham Woods?
It's a quieter time of year to come explore on a nature hike or work on team-building on Peanut Butter Mountain in cool, but mild, temperatures.
We also still have availability in March and April 2018. Having a fun trip to Upham Woods scheduled in early spring can help make those long winter months pass quickly.

Thank you to our August 2017 visitors!
August is a bittersweet month; cooler breezes mean we're heading toward an exciting fall season, but we hate to say goodbye to summer campers! We'd like to say a special thank you to all of the groups that helped us close out our Summer 2017 season! Canoeing, rowing the barge to Blackhawk Island, taking aim at our archery targets, and learning to work together on Peanut Butter Mountain...these are the things great summer memories are made of!
