RALLY YOUR TROOPS!

Today, we need thousands of science teachers across the state of Texas to e-mail Senator Florence Shapiro regarding HB 500.  A coalition of core curriculum associations (English-Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and your own Science Teachers Association of Texas) have sent a letter with recommended changes to the senator, which can be viewed here (http://statweb.org/HB500A.pdf).

The Senate is interested in hearing our voices but we need each one of you to send in your opinions on HB 500.  It is important that you do not send in a form letter, but instead send a short personal letter stating you who are, where you are from and the changes you would like to be made to HB 500.  Please put "HB 500" in the subject line.

We are asking all of our members to also email Senator Shapiro giving your support to the coalition's proposal.  The senator's email is Florence.shapiro@senate.state.tx.us .

Our primary recommendations for HB 500 are below:

  1. All EOCs taken by a student should count toward the student's graduation.
  2. Eliminating the option of the inclusion of 15% of the EOC score in a course grade.
  3. An incremental implementation of the passing standard.

Please send this to as many teachers as you can and ask them to join you in these efforts!
