What are they and what does it mean to your benefits plan
Employee benefit plans are all designed with internal limitations and maximums which are intended to maintain affordability and to prevent abuse. Most of these limitations and maximums are up front and stated in the employee booklet, as well as the contracts.
What aren't always so clear and up front are the maximum amounts insurers will pay for individual products or services on a per claim basis.
These maximums are known as Usual & Customary (U&Cs) or Reasonable & Customary (R&Cs).

The dialogue around precarious employment seems to be gaining momentum across the business landscape because of its connectivity to so many existing (Employment Insurance) and proposed (Ontario Basic Income Pilot Programs) policy frameworks. A general theme in the policy dialogue is that precarious employees didn't start out wanting to wear that hat but were "causalities" of labour market circumstances. However, there are some that actually choose this route and there are others that benefit from their precarious employment setup.

Opioids and Pain Management
 Pain is a distressing sensation that many of us experience on a daily basis as a result of incidents such as cuts, burns, accidents, and countless other reasons. Pain can range from acute to chronic and severe. How we deal with pain has changed over the past couple of decades. There has been a large increase in the prescribing and use of opioid medications for acute and long term chronic pain (lasting more than 3 months). Retail pharmacies across Canada dispensed 19 million prescriptions for opioids in 2016 and overdoses and deaths have seen a sharp increase. In 2015, 734 people died as a result of opioid use, a four fold increase since 1991. It is therefore important to be aware of the important side effects and risk of opioids and safer ways to manage pain.
