2018 General Assembly
January 10 - March 10 (est.)
The General Assembly convenes on January 10th, the 73rd Governor’s Inauguration will be held January 13th and already 675  pre-filed bills have come out of the GA's Division of Legislative Services.

We are off to a byzantine beginning – new governor, new secretary of education, new state superintendent, and as of January 4th, Republicans in the House of Delegates hold a slight majority; however, the new cast of young Democrats will be heard on the Floor of the House and in committees. The Democratic sweep in the November election resulted in the decimation of the House Education Committee. We are anxious to see who will become the newest committee members.
VASSP Director of Government Relations and Lead Lobbyist Elizabeth "Bet" Neale has compiled an update on what school principals and assistant principals can expect for the legislative session - please click here or the button below to read the full update.
As always for every legislative session, VASSP will be on hand daily to  see and be seen and bring to our members the latest news on political actions that might impact middle and high school education. Be sure to check out VASSP's website throughout the 60-day session for General Assembly updates.

Direct and frequent communications with your delegate and state senator as well as with each member of the House Education Committee and Senate Education and Health Committee is critical, especially during the legislative session. After committee assignments are announced for 2018, we will forward them to you. With member voices, VASSP can be more successful than ever in the challenging year ahead!
