Dr. Patton received the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto Award

Voorhees College alumnus Dr. Joseph D. Patton III was recently presented with the Order of Palmetto award.

The Order of Palmetto award is South Carolina's highest civilian honor of service. Patton was recognized for his extraordinary work and dedication to the citizens of S.C. He demonstrated outstanding leadership at GLEAMNS, a human resource commission located in Greenwood, S.C.

"In the world of making a positive difference, you have been an incredibly affective leader to those around you and your effort has not gone unnoticed," said Gov. Nikki Haley in letter to Patton. "We are privileged to have you in South Carolina and appreciate your commitment to our great state."


July Alumni Spotlight: Antwan Carter

Voorhees alumnus Antwan Carter is currently a police officer for the City of Charleston Police Department in Charleston, S.C. and has been on the squad for approximately three and a half years.
 
Carter was a criminal justice major and graduated from Voorhees in 2011. He was a member of the men's basketball team all four years, where he served as captain for two years. He also ran cross country and served as the captain of the track and field team for three years.

Since being an officer, his most memorable experience was the church massacre that occurred on June 17 at Mother Emmanuel AME church in Charleston. Nine victims were shot and killed when the suspect fired off in the middle of Bible study.

Voorhees hosts its annual Opening School Institute


On Aug. 7 at 8 a.m. in the St James Building on campus, all Voorhees College faculty and staff will gather to welcome new members, receive campus and administrative updates and get motivated for the upcoming school year.

The highlight of the Institute is featured guest speaker Mike Adams, who is the assistant vice president of service operations for Colonial Life in Columbia, S.C. Colonial Life is a leading voluntary benefits provider for over three million working Americans and 80,000 employers. Adams is responsible to employers, policyholders, agents and brokers by supporting processes related to the servicing of customer and producer needs while optimizing billing administration.

Voorhees College moving to four day
class schedule 
 
Effective August 15, 2015, Voorhees College business hours will be Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Fridays, business hours will be 8 a.m. to noon. There will be no classes on Fridays at Voorhees College.
