Vermont Cancer Survivor Network Newsletter
June 2018

June 3 is National Cancer Survivors Day®

National Cancer Survivors Day® is an annual, treasured Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide, and around the world , on the first Sunday in June. It is a CELEBRATION for those who have survived, an INSPIRATION for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of SUPPORT for families, and an OUTREACH to the community. On National Cancer Survivors Day®, thousands gather across the globe to honor cancer survivors and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding, and even inspiring.

VCSN Board member and cancer survivor Boo (Eleanore) Sinclair reflects on an aspect of survivorship important to her:
A person spends her life enjoying the company and caring of friends, and yet, how much my friends mean to me became much clearer as a result of my journey through cancer. Their presence, their emotions, their love and tenderness served as heartfelt companions through crying, hugging, laughing, just being, and so much more. I have such a warm feeling in my heart for how much my friends enhanced my life, and walked with me through those days and continue to do so.

Pam Heffernan
Nurse, Cancer Survivor, and 2017 Raffle Winner!
Pam Heffernan, cancer survivor and registered nurse, was the winner of last year’s raffle prize offered by VCSN supporters Prudy and George Burnes. Pam had a choice of a week at the Burnes’ home in Galway, Ireland or a stay at the beautiful Isabelle’s B&B in Martha’s Vineyard. The stars aligned to allow her to make the Ireland trip with family members and she had a marvelous time. Pam became a Kindred Connections volunteer after her own experience receiving peer support when she was first diagnosed. “I connected with someone I never met. We spent lots of time talking.” After retiring from Central Vermont Medical Center, she found a new home at the Danville Health Center, and she’s interested in developing cancer support in the Danville area.

Holding the winning raffle ticket was a total surprise to Pam. “They told me, ‘You won!’ and I said, ‘What?!’” Buy a ticket and you might have the same delightful surprise! Get your tickets from Mary Ellen: 802-552-8115 or [email protected]

Save the Date: Golfers fore VCSN

The first annual golf tournament benefiting VCSN was held last September at the Sugarbush Golf Club in Warren. Thirty-two golfers braved the heat (remember those 90+ degree days?) to play the beautiful Robert Trent Jones golf course. What a fun day it was, as well as profitable! We're looking forward to the second annual tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 23rd. Will you join us?

The $125 entry fee includes range balls, greens fees, box lunch, "aprés golf" refreshments, a raffle, and prizes.  Tournament format is a scramble with 4-person teams. For more information about entering the tournament, being a sponsor (levels range from $200 to $1500), or volunteering to help, contact Sharon Kellermann at [email protected] or 802-793-8362.
