Colleagues,

My sincere thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate the official launch of the Department of Surgery’s Office of Research, Biomedicine, Innovation and Technology (ORBIT) which took place on Wednesday September 20 th in the MMEC lobby. Your attendance and support as we recognized the incredible contributions of our newly appointed Associated Chairs for Research and Co-Directors for Global Surgery is greatly appreciated. The launch of ORBIT highlights the mission of the Department of Surgery in providing patient centered care founded on discovery through research, innovation and education. The Global Surgery Program will continue to expand our educational program at VCU and worldwide.

If you were unable to attend, please take a few minutes to read about ORBIT and its vision and mission by clicking here . Also click here to check out the great pictures from the event.

This month, as we celebrate the 100 th birthday of Dr. David Hume, please take a few moments to truly celebrate the many connections, programs, and accomplishments we’ve made and continue to make at VCU Surgery.

Sincerely,

Global Outreach
Congratulations are due to Dr. Sudha Jayaraman in the receipt of not one but two grants for her work in Rwanda. Totaling approximately $650,000, Dr. Jayaraman's grants, one from the National Cancer Institute, and the other from the Fogarty International Center, aim to standardize the delivery of prehospital care for noncommunicable diseases and injuries which are skyrocketing in poorer countries.

In addition, Dr. Jayaraman received a Rotary Global Grant to work with the Rotary Clubs in Williamsburg and Kigali (Rwanda) as well as the national ambulance service of Rwanda to help create training programs for ambulance staff through the CTCCE . Because of the rarity of having a national ambulance service in poor countries, this service in Rwanda is truly visionary.

Lastly, the Ministry of Health of Rwanda has asked VCU to engage in plans to help develop the trauma and emergency system for the country. This is a legal relationship that has support from the highest levels of the Ministry because of the expertise that VCU has and the long-standing collaboration we have had with them.

Congratulations to Dr. Jayaraman for these incredible accomplishments!
PhotoVoice Project
In conjunction with the Mayor's Youth Academy , the Injury & Violence Prevention Program 's Emerging Leaders program facilitated the 2017 PhotoVoice project. This project, supported by faculty, staff, and volunteers across the university had participants carry a camera to take pictures of things meaningful to them and their life story. Upon completion, they wrote poetry and stories to explain the pictures and how they tied to their lives. The goal of this project was to empower our youth and encourage self-reflection, ambition, and a fight for success no matter what challenges are faced. It also allowed others, specifically those from differing backgrounds, to better understand the challenges and stories facing today's youth.

Amy Vincent, Assistant Director of IVPP praised the success of the program, stating "PhotoVoice served as a venue for young people to share their story, a little piece of themselves."

Residency Coordinator of the Year
Cindi Phares, General Surgery Residency Coordinator, has been selected by the Graduate Medical Education Committee as the 2017 Coordinator of the Year.

In addition to its usual goals of establishing and implementing policies and procedures regarding the quality of education and the work environment of residents, the GME Committee selects one residency coordinator each year who best supports and strengthens the trainees and programs across our institution.

Dr. Rahul Anand , Associate Professor and General Surgery Residency Program Director, states, "What makes Cindi an ideal candidate for this award is her drive to constantly improve this program, help others, hold others to high standards, and serve as a role model for our residents. She has also contributed several features to our program, which I think other residency programs could learn from. Simply put, Cindi knows the ACGME rules as well as the American Board of Surgery rules inside and out. Whenever I have a question about the nuts and bolts of running the residency program, I know that I can depend on her knowledge base and guidance. Her care in adhering to the ACGME standards helps us to comply with all of the necessary regulations and make sure that we are on the right track."

Congratulations, Cindi!
